[ Ubuntu Dapper VS Fedora Core 5 ] Share your thoughts

Hi,

I recently installed Fedora Core 5 on one machine. Result, I claim : Ubuntu Is the Greatest for me !! I made my choice ! (reasons: forum, experience, debian base, Server Installation of 300 MB only in 5 minutes (impossible to do better ; it takes ages with FC5 !!), one CD only for the server install, easy and very accurate & convenient partitioning during install, swap calculated, and the [FONT="Arial Black"]huge repositories[/FONT] of Ubuntu !!)

What are your experiences with these 2 great Linux, Fedora Core 5 & Ubuntu Dapper ?

I hate RPM's, so my vote's for Ubuntu. Fedora Core 5 is pretty polished though.

Although it comes on multiple disks that does mean that you can do an offline install easily, which is one up on Ubuntu.

The community and support for Ubuntu really swings it for me - there is nothing else like as far as I've experienced in the Linux community as a whole.

So out of the two, Ubuntu for me, but I'll be sure to check out FC6 when it's released.

I really like FC5, but I find Ubuntu's hardware support superior.

When I rebuilt my tower, I tried many different distros, and I had the best luck with Dapper, FC5, and SuSE 10.1.

The tower has an odd harddrive setup, and all three distros seemed to figure it out without any meddling. However, FC5 always flubed the harddrive issues after a few days (I tried several times). Dapper and SuSE 10.1 worked flawlessly.

The tower actually runs SuSE 10.1 now, because I need Maya to work on it, and Dapper and Maya are not happy with one another. Oh, and I love SuSE 10.1 (though Dapper is still king).

FC5 has my vote at the moment. I keep getting surprised at some of the things yum can do- like automatically switch mirrors if one goes down. It doesn't render fonts as nicely as Ubuntu does on my lappy, but it's a fine system when you get past the utter slowness and occasional horribleness of yum.

Do i see a BUMPS like program for Fedora? You do a great job with it for Ubuntu, so i know you could Fedora..:D

I have us.archive.ubuntu.com AND archive.ubuntu.com in my sources.list just in case one goes down, it IS very handy that yum can do that for you. Seems like every time I go to install something in yum, it takes it about as long as it would take apt to install a program for yum to check everything to make sure it's ok, and apt seems to handle dependency checking much better, AND updating through yum has hosed my fedora installs more than once.

I like it a lot, but I think Debian based distros are far better, though Fedora is very polished.

Well - in general I prefer Debian based distributions, especially Ubuntu is both reliable and very fast (compared to other SuSE and Fedora - this has also been noticed in an article of the German computer magazine c't). Especially the standard configuration of Ubuntu and the easy access to restricted multimedia formats as well as the inclusion of (partly) non-free drivers like madwifi is very appealing to me. Yet Fedora core has its advantages which are (among others):

• A polished installer (though the SuSE one is still the best I have ever met)
• support for dm_raid at installation
• proactive security measures (read: SELinux)
• less hardware trouble for me (Dapper does not boot for me with USB 2.0 enabled).

My vote for Ubuntu of course. I only tried FC4 but I know I'd like more Ubuntu even if I'd see FC5. I guess the poll's results will not reflect reality as this is the Ubuntu Forum ;)

I recently installed Fedora Core 5 and I wasn't impressed. I only installed the first 2 cd's. The first annoying thing was yum, it sucks. It's not nearly as fast as Ubuntu and Fedora Core doesn't come with a frontend for it on installation. And then Fedora didn't play nice with my partitions and it took me forever to get back on Ubuntu. And even now it's done something to my internet even after I have deleted it. I prefer Debian based to RPM anyday. So I will stick with Ubuntu.

As you mentioned, I was soo so glad of using yum, hmm hmm, that I installed the apt-get for Fedora Core 5.

And, that's rather like deb. Lot of FC5 users are usign apt-get now.

Concerning the nice thing, I noticed that an official and updated sources.list is downloaded from internet. Nothg to look & search for. It's kind of very automatic. We just follow the HowTo.

I think we, (Ubuntu), should also provide the possibilty of downloading an updated and fully working /etc/apt/sources.list from the Ubuntu website/forum, even if we have an old guy like hoary or breezy still. That's why it's even more importnat, because of sites that are down.

I confirmed that partioning wiht FC5 was kind of Hell !

I wish taht Ubuntu keeps One CD Server install, so easy config duing the installation.

apt-get dist-upgrade is really amazing with Ubuntu. It rocks like crazy & permits soo much. Even with the CD, this is workign great. Thank you the development team !!

& finally, I wish even bigger repositories !!

My experiance with fedora; I liked FC3 maybe was even a little suprised by that. FC4 was not as good as FC3 Many little aggravating problems-menus not working and so on..FC5 worst perhaps even much worst than FC4. We are at a ubuntu forum-and I've spent time at fedoraforum.org they are not too kind to ubuntu and those that admire ubuntu-let me tell you. Had fedora kept pace, for me, with what I experianced with FC3-well who knows, but the forums here are IMO easier going and a better experiance overall. I like the fit on one cd idea-a lot of what's on a fedora install isn't needed-by me anyway. Lastly I really like the mission stance of debian & ubuntu.

I came from RED HAT and tried FC5 and Suse 10.1 at about the same time. Hands down...Ubuntu just looked and felt more like a finished, usable product. I especially like how it loaded the first time on my Toshiba laptop. It recognized all of my peripherals except the Winmodem and in minutes I was using Ubuntu to do my work instead of putzing with it trying to make things work. I hung on to my FC5 desktops for several weeks and then finally relented and converted to Ubuntu. Good Job!

I loaded up FC5 a while back...ready my blog below for my full thoughts, but Ubuntu has better out of the box hardware support, so that is why I went back to Ubuntu.

Either way, I like Ubuntu Dapper better because of apt-get and the hardware support. I have an HP nc6000 laptop. Back in Hoary days, HP worked with Ubuntu developers to do a special release for some HP/Compaq business laptops, mine included. Since then, these changes were integrated into the main releases (Breezy and Dapper). I found Ubuntu to automatically set up much easier on my hardware. That and the fact that I cut my Linux teeth on Debian so Ubuntu is much more familiar than a Red Hat based distro.

Yeah, not sure what the poll tells you that you don't already know since we're on an Ubuntu forum.

I have a soft spot for Fedora since it was the first Linux distro I tried. I like it, and I think FC5 is great.

Either way, I like Ubuntu Dapper better because of apt-get and the hardware support. this is a common misconception. if i were given a quid for each time i read about people believing that fedora doesn't have apt-get this, i would be a millionaire by now.

Indeed, living wihtout apt-get with Fedora is really difficult. First thing I did with fc5 was installing this apt-get and synaptic, whihc was very well explained (howto) in your FC5 forum.

First thing I did with fc5 was installing this apt-get and synaptic, whihc was very well explained (howto) in your FC5 forum. i didn't have any problem because i never have to use the command line to install anything. i get along just fine using Smart. i just gave the above example to show that apt-get is there is one wants to use it. i've never found any good use for apt-get, though.

Umm, to ask if Ubuntu is better distribution than Fedora in an Ubuntu forum is a little ... predictable :-)

My vote goes to Fedora Core. I think Ubuntu does "bizarre" things like to disable CUPS web configuration or to use a propietary bug tool like Launchpad.net

Fedora Core is not perfect, it hasn't a good documentation, community forum is little, but it includes good applications and tools: yum, eclipse compiled natively, latest gnome version, network manager, SELinux...

Why the hate for rpms?

Fedoras .rpm == Debian's/Ubuntus .deb

Almost the same thing. Now hate for yum...THAT I understand :p

People used to hate RPMs because it didn't exist a package manager like yum or apt-rpm but this is a stupid question now. In fact, I think to create a RPM is easier than a DEB.
