Ehm... Excuse me, btw my guide isn't about «Building latest Beryl from source», or better... Not only! There's a script to package latest beryl svn with a click, but there's also an Ubuntu Dapper/Edgy repository to have daily upgrades for beryl (and emerald and all others beryl related apps)!

I'm sure he realizes that, and will add it, but isn't Ubuntu about helping people without asking for anything back? We are all part of an Ubuntu community, and we help each other out as needed. I tried it, but Dapper was not able to update from the mentioned links in the source.list (it could not connect to compiz).

i had beryl now im on compiz, both seem great but in beryl when the terminal background is transparent it is transparent for everything so i can see the web browser beneath it but in compiz it doesnt do that how do i get it to do that, is there an option somewhere

'Official Compiz' is now more official. As of today, it is part of ubuntu-desktop in fiesty. If it sticks for 2 more days, it should be in the release.

I managed to get Beryl working on Feisty on my system which has an ATI Radeon 8500LE AGP video card.

I've just posted my xorg.conf in this thread

The performance is terrible, but I'm hoping other people with the same card can help fix that. This particular model of Radeon is known to be especially troublesome, and the fact it works at all I think is noteworthy.

That is what I used, it's ok, although possibly confusing for newbies in some places.

Thanks for all the work you do with Ubuntu/Beryl

One suggestion, for nvidia cards of course.

To configure X for beryl there is a series of commands that does the trick clean and fast :

sudo nvidia-xconfig

 sudo nvidia-xconfig -composite; sudo nvidia-xconfig -allow-glx-with-composite
 sudo nvidia-xconfig -render-accel; sudo nvidia-xconfig -add-argb-glx-visuals

The first command configures X AND makes a back up of xorg.conf if needed

The second is all 1 long line, or a series of commands separated by ;

I hope that information will help some folks here.

Edit ~ sorry if this is not the proper place to post. I know manual configuration is not a common as it once was, but those commands are sometimes quite helpful.

The restricted drivers manager in Feisty will do all this for you automatically bodhi :)

Here's a simple question:

I used http://www.albertomilone.com/latest_nvidia_udsf_feisty.htm or another document exactly with that layout to install my nvidia drivers. So, I see the nvidia screen display each time I login. Now, why do I have to install the drivers all of you are talking about for Beryl? What's up with that? I'm using a Geforce4 MX 4000 this time.

I have Beryl-svn working on Ubuntu Fiesty. I have a DELL Inspiron 9300 latop with ATI Mobility Radeon 300 graphics card. I have posted an article on installation process that I followed to get this thing working (after a lots of trial and error) -

It currently works for me on 1280x800 resolution without any problem. The response time is good and no freezing problems. Also, works on 1440X900 but freezes after 2 minutes. Beryl doesn't startup at all for any higher resolution than this. I have observed that enabling "Motion Blur" in Beryl settings manager slows down the system considerably resulting in unacceptable response time. So for the time being I have it disabled for me.

How does one figure out what it is we're supposed to be looking at. I see all these links for NVIDA and ATI Edgy and fiesty, dapper and AIGLX, XGL after a while I'm so confused about what I should do or what I should be looking at I give up for awhile.

I think I need to find out what version of Ubuntu I'm running then what do I have for hardware and then see what I can do with it.

Any ideas?

It there any HOW-To guides for the compiz that comes installed with Feisty? Is it possible to update this Compiz version to Compiz-Fusion and what are its advantages? Can anyone suggest which window manager will be suitable foy my configuration with low memory consumption?

My System Specs. - Intel 865GBF(Onboard Video & Sound), 2.4GHz, 256 MB RAM.

Old compiz (more resource friendly for sure):

• After you have set-up your XGL or AIXGL composite (using any of the guides that is appropriate to your video card) and you have composite enabled, you can just choose "Enable desktop effects" under the Preferences menu. Given you have an Intel onboard videocard you can even just do "Enable desktop effects".

To change settings using this Compiz version, is a bit more tricky, but all the options are found under

1. [ALT]-[F2]
2. Type: "gconf-editor"
3. Look for Apps>Compiz, there you will find all settings.

To download a graphical front-end with the basic settings you can install Gnome Compiz Manager. However I noticed that some of the settings here are overwritten by the "Enable desktop effects program". So they wont hold on reboot. In Gconf-editor they do (but you need to know what you're doing (or simply try like me)). In the old Compiz version the "wobbly" plugin needs to be enabled, otherwise you wont be able to unmaximize Firefox. But you can reduce it's effects under the options in gconf-editor.

I installed compiz fusion and tested some plugins, everything works fine. But for a reason i can't change my configuration now. Everytime i start compizconfig i get disabled controls. I can't (de)activate plugins or change settings. The checks in the checkboxes are grey and not black. Anybody?

KDE is your window manager, ubuntu is the operating system. Ubuntu by default comes with the Gnome window manager.

I originally had the expocity (?) features where the upper left and right corners of the screen would activate expose-like features...

and now after an update and a restart they're gone

I'd install the effects manager but the whole system is a mess and overlapping and confusing, it isn't clear what you should have installed. I had it installed before and it totally screwed up my multiple desktop interface. I finally got it back by changing things around randomly, but like I said, the expocity features are gone and I didn't even do anything.

hope this is fixed by the time of the release.

I also can't click with the mouse to rotate the cube. It says the keys are ctrl+alt+button1 but nothing happens when I try that......

I have that problem too...also i don't get the window border on any window...no min,max and close buttons, i have to right click on the each programme at bgottom of desktop.

Me too. on Gutsy Gibbon - added the compiz package as suggested here.

I had used beryl and compiz before during earlier versions of ubuntu and the cube was fine. Now its just a thin panel like it's on south beach diet.

And other things, like cube rotation didn't work until I rebooted. if what you see when you do the ctrl+alt+button 1 is like a piece of paper moving then you need to right click on the bottom right (workspaces) and chage the column size to 4 instead of 2. Also make sure you enable 4 desktops in the Advanced 3d Settings Hope this helps !!! Oh and this goes to_[COLOR="PaleTurquoise"] kaffeine [/COLOR]_as well

Here's my take on it.

1. Open a terminal.
2. Type 'sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list' (without the quotes).
3. Enter your password. Your sources.list will open.
4. Add 'deb http://ubuntu.beryl-project.org edgy main' to the bottom without a #.

I hope this works.
