How do i type in Tamil ?

Hi thr , First , let me congratulate everyone to make Tamil LoCo team ,as a first Loco team to propell from India. Hats off to Tamil LoCo team ,I am glad that i can contribute here to my best. I have been rushing to make my post here with my hands and thoughts rushing in to type and also to make my friends know abt this Tamil LoCo team. I hope many natives ppls'll be finding more friendly to post here rather than in a English forums section ( and myself too ).

Wow, I feel proud of Ubuntu here ...

I want to know how do you guys type in Tamil with Ubuntu. I am a madrassi' afterall :) but not used in multi-lingual environment.

It is great to hear those encouraging words from you. There is a firefox Tamilkey support provided by Mukunth & Team.

Goto: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/extensions/

Search for TamilKey and install.

That is for firefox. Right click where ever u need to type in Tamil, and choose the suitable keyboard layout. :-)

To able to write Tamil:

1. First install Tamil fonts package..
2. System -> Preferance -> Keyboard -> Layout tab -> Add -> India -> Tamil ->Ok.
3. Add a keyboard indicator on ur panel so that u can toggle.
4. Click on the keyboard indicator to select Tamil open OO and start writing Tamil---.

Well , congratulations on the tamil team indeed . Am currently in Madras but born and brought up in kolkata .

Well am not really that interested in the typing in tamil as i cant read or write the language barely speak it . but i would be interested to know about typing in other indian languages , example hindi or bengali , would anyone know anything about this ?

hi guys!! i recently came to kknow about this site*_[COLOR="RoyalBlue"] http://quillpad.in[/COLOR]_* through one of my firiends. @shutdown its a nice tool for people who know to speak , but dont know to write, but wanna type in tamil. just browse through the site, you just need to type in english what you speak, and the rest the tool does it .

i was also able to find this tool for other south indian languages and marathi. just try it out , i found it useful when i wanted to write mails in tamil

1. it didnt want to me to install fonts or
2. i didnt have to search for keys in the keyboard which will give me a particular letter

I m a Maharashtriyan and just now enter in this Linux world. May i know how can i configure my SCIM to writee in Marathi and Hindi.

அனைவருக்கும் எனது முதல் வனக்கதை உரிதாக்கி கொன்டு இந்த இனைய தளத்தில் இப்படி ஒரு குழுவை கன்டவுடன் மனம் களிக்கின்றது. தொடர்ந்து நமது உரையாடல் வளர வாழ்த்தி விரைவில் மீன்டும் சந்திக்கும் வரை வணக்கம் கூறி விடைபெருகிறேன்.

good day to you

i am new to Ubuntu ...rather planning on shifting off windows to Ubuntu . Like many of the recent posters, users, I too am eager to start using phonetic keyboards for Tamil , typing / trying other indian languages typing in Ubuntu . I am typing this particular post from the web and so this is in enNglish. Otherwise i can read / write Tamil, and I have been using keyman etc in windows. i need to / plan to input in Tamil in libre office , open office and in the web browser

could you all please share your experience so far ?
