I see all of these posts looking for others in their state so might as well see if there is anybody else in the Nutmeg state (or the Constitution State) or better known as Connecticut!?

My path takes me between Hartford, Waterbury and Danbury and my previous job took me to Stratford.

Also, in Danbury there is a computer club called DACS (Danbury Area Computer Society). The general meetings (1rst Tuesday of month) are open to anybody, it's a good-sized group (285 memebers) and they have a number of interesting Special Interest Groups (SIG) including one for Linux (meet 3rd Wednesday of month).

If you want to attend, let me know and I'll meet you there (directions on website)!

Otherwise would like to see if there is anybody else the state or right along the border (w/NY, MA or RI).

Alright.. I'm trying to set up a Connecticut LoCo team and even though it looks like something thrown up after eating road-kill, it's a start.

Like I said, it is in the earliest of early stages, but if anybody has any knowledge how to go about these things, or suggestions on improving them, or even just the time to tweak them please don't hesitate!

What are any of your thoughts?

It looks like you set up a project team instead of a loco team. There's development stuff showing on your team's page instead of the add member / details / polls stuff that shows on the NU Ubuntu one.

I haven't found ANYTHING regarding making changes to the site! So far the site has not been intuitive and I don't see all that much use for it. I don't seem to be a member, or a driver or at all realated even though I started it and I don't see anywhere I can add content.

For launchpad you mean? I think it's because you have a 'team' page (which goes with project devel) instead of a "group". The group pages let you put a little description of the group and a logo and polls and add members, and if your group has a specific project that it wants to help implement and you've got a lot of able-to-help members, your group can assign bugs or specs to itself to work on.

Ok, clicking on the Registration button I see the [_[COLOR="Blue"]Ubuntu Virginia Local Team[/COLOR]_]("https://launchpad.net/virginiateam") as a project and then there is the [[COLOR="blue"]_"Ubuntu Virginia Local Team" team_[/COLOR]]("https://launchpad.net/~virginiateam").

So I think we have 1/2 of the equation.. the project and somehow we have to make a "team" based off of that project?! :confused: But I have no idea how.

Looking around I see that some memberships can be open while others are closed (pending), etc.

Your LoCo team does not have to be involved with any projects. If Virginia has a specific project, that could be why they have 2 pages. Or it could be that they messed up too. NU Ubuntu Team just has the team/group and not a project one as we don't have a regional software project. We have closed membership because RAV had trouble before, so now we have to approve new members. Open membership means they just click "join" and they're in.

I think I found out a portion of the problems I was having and I should put this in as a bug: IE7.

Using IE7 (I'm at work) and those menues on the left are NOT there! Nothing shows up (which is why it was very frustrating readling "in the menu on the left" because there was NOTHING on the left!).

OK Dragon, that LOCO howto has all the instructions I need for setting up an IRC channel.

I will try to do some experiments in the next couple of days, and if I am successful, we can try and set up a meeting time.

Just so people can start thinking about it, what is better for people, a weeknight, or weekend ?

I assume most of us are working, and IRC does not work well behind a firewall, so daytime during the week is probobbly out for most (I know it's out for me ...:confused: )

Here is the snippet I snagged from the howto.

IRC Channel IRC is a great way for the team to have real-time discussions about the group. You should register a channel on the Freenode IRC network as #ubuntu-CC where CC is the ISO country code (such as #ubuntu-fr for France). For United States Teams, please use the full state name (#ubuntu-utah for Utah):

Register your nickname with a password: /msg NickServ register [password]

or if already registered:/msg NickServ identify [password]

Create the channel by joining it for the first time: /join #ubuntu-xxxx

Register the channel with Chanserv: /msg ChanServ Register #ubuntu-xxxx [password]

Invite the Chanserv bot so it can give you operator rights when needed: /msg chanserv set #ubuntu-xxxx guard on

Add yourself, and others as needed, to the operator access control list: /msg ChanServ access #ubuntu-xxxx add [nickname] [level]

If you want to log the channel, which is recommended for IRC meetings, you should contact MatthiasUrlichs to get a LoCoBot (a bot on irc.freenode.org). Ask him to add your channel to the list.

Worked for me last night, and was easy to get there!

• select Connect from the menu
• select FreeNode from the list

installed kubuntu 7.04 about 2 months ago and have used nothing but that since.

triple boot xp/suse/kubuntu....suse hasn't been used much at all lately and xp almost never.

Hello.

I live in the Central Connecticut area. I work at one of Connecticut's large insurance companies. I've been using Ubuntu for about a year after living with Windows for longer than I like to remember (who remembers Microsoft Presentation Manager 1.0?). I'm not a Linux geek, but I am very comfortable around computers (my first "PC" was a DEC PDP-8, used as a research instrument while I was in grad school at UConn back in 1975/76). I've used CP/M, DOS in various incarnations, just about every flavor of Windows, and before all that I used mainframe and minicomputers of various kinds ... always as tools.

I would love to work with others up and down the Connecticut Valley to evangelize Ubuntu - so far I have converted one person, and I would like to bring even more people out of the shadow of Micro$oft. I've been slowly but surely removing all vestiges of M$ domination from my home.

I have a system76 laptop (Serval performance) that is my everyday system, and a couple of older desktop systems (one that is mine which will become a server for the household, and another which is my wife's system - which I will be reloading with Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon) all on a household network which is also my connection to the world for my TiVo, and provides my broadband access for Vonage IP telephony.

It's good to have 6 to 12 Mbps down and 2+ Mbps up, even if it IS with COMCA$T (i've gotten to know some of the techs, there, and they are nice folks who allowed me to show them Ubuntu when they came to my home to troubleshoot a long-term connection problem ... they were blown away by it's power and ease of use while I used my Ubuntu laptop to help them perform diagnoses).

I keep learning how to free myself from the strictures imposed on us by Redmond, and moving more and more into the Open Software environment. Every day, I learn more and more. Maybe we can help each other, and the public at large.

BTW - has anyone else been working through some of the more interesting Ubuntu books. I've started working with Hacking Ubuntu (Neal Krawetz), Wiley Publishing, 2007. It's well written, and a step above Ubuntu for Non-Geeks, and similar books.

Meriden checking in! I'm currently running Mint Linux Daryna (based on 7.10) as a pseudo-HTPC (swap in BT/Hulu for DVR). I've used linux on and off fore a number of years; when I take a break from gaming, mostly.

Just saw this thread tonight. I've been a CT resident all my life, and divide my time between home, just west of Hartford, and school, at UConn. I've been using Ubuntu since the summer of 2006, nearly full time (I keep XP for games). I'm the household computer guru, so my parents will surely be moving to Ubuntu in the future. Just last week, I helped out a family friend with a computer issue:

The PC had valuable data on it, and, due to a power outage, Winblows BSOD'd before loging in. I used the Gutsy live CD to save the data to a flash drive, and then, as the XP disk was missing, with the owner's permission, I formatted and installed gutsy on this 8-year-old Dell. Everything works just fine, and the friend is very happy.

In addition, since both of my parents are in education, I have heard that at least one school district in central CT is strongly considering GNU/Linux as a permanent replacement for MS software. The IT people are fed up, most recently because they have had to patch their Office 2003 installation to handle the Excel 2007 calculation bug that occurs when students bring in work saved at home with the new version of Office. Apparently, they think as I do: Wouldn't it be easier if we could just give everyone the same copy of OpenOffice that we use at school for work at home?

Like some others, I started with Slackware back around '94. I still have CDs from walnut creek when they were shipping Slackware with kernel 1.2.13. I worked for an ISP and migrated the servers from SGI Indy's running IRIX to x86's running Slackware and then to Debian, once I realized how much easier it was to keep the systems up to date with apt!

Now Im an embedded Linux engineer and work on Debian systems. I still have much love for Debian, but I use Ubuntu on my desktop at work and on my laptop at home.

Portland here. Any social group for Nutmegers in the forum? My commute takes me from Portland to East Hartford via Rt 2 I've followed someone with an Ubuntu logo on the back of their car.

Does this team even really exist anymore?

Anyway, I'm moving back to North Central CT (Suffield) in a few months and was looking to see if there was any sort of loco presence.

If people are interested in rebuilding, I'm willing to help, but I'm not sure I"ll have the time (or energy) to actually start up a new team if this one is pretty much gone.

My mother lives in Portland. I got her using Ubuntu too.

I have been approached by a few people regarding the status of the Connecticut LoCo Group.

At this stage, I don't have the time necessary to lead it. I have never fully understood what it would take or how to go about running it when I started it.

At the same time, it's mission and purpose is still vallant; spreading the works of Ubuntu and supporting the users locally.

For that reason, I am requesting somebody or multiple people to come forward and take the reigns. This is a good opportunity to not only give back to the Ubuntu Community but to build up your own personal experience and resume.

So all people interested in taking over this LoCo group, please post so here. In a week or two we can collect the names of all intersted parties and I will put up a poll to vote for whomever you want.

I apologize for this taking so long, and it should have been done a long time ago. I hope that under new leadership that this can grow to a vibrant and active group which I too can participate when time avails itself.

This is one of those things that got me, was that there was no clear-cut outline of what it entails, so a lot of it is up to you.

We had one person work hard getting a booth manned at the Cogan computer fairs. Somebody else helped out with setting up an IRC channel.

To facillitate this there are a number of tools available and I'll work with whomever to determine how to handle the hand-off, or can stay involved as a backup at the leader's choice.

Nutmeger in Danbury. I've been using Ubuntu 10.04 LTS x64 for about a month or so, complete with Compiz-Fusion desktop. The long and short of it is, I love it. I started a while ago with Hardy Heron and then left for a while. I blasted a system with Ubuntu and couldn't get it back easily, which is why I migrated back to Windows. However, I decided to give the most recent incarnation a try and was pleasantly surprised. For one thing, they had apparently resolved some of the issues I had way back with wireless connections. Although I'm now working with a wired connection, I was happy to see their progress. I feel somewhat more protected on the web with Linux... the viruses are out of control in Windows (any incarnation). So far, the Compiz-Fusion desktop blows away anything Windows is doing, from what I've seen. RSVP when you're able. Good Luck!
