I need a mentor :)

I am glad to see the ubuntu is embraced by many people from chennai as well. I thought there would only be a handful and countable. Looks like i was wrong ;)

I am a noob to ubuntu and just like many others, even I am sick and tired of windows. Thats the reason for my jump to ubuntu. From what ive seen so for I love it. It really nice.

Whenever i tried searching for something particular in the english forums, I always wondered how nice and easy it would be if there was someone live to teach me this new OS. I would learn much more quickly.... especially the basics. I was under the impression that there wouldn't be anyone using ubuntu in chennai and so i just tried learning from the web.

Now i realize there is an active community of people in chennai that use ubuntu.

so, if anyone here can teach me ubuntu, just the basics of permissions, installing, uninstalling, repositories, terminal shell usage, sudo and a couple of other things, i would be grateful. Like a crash course. I know a little. But not enough to manage without windows completely.

I would like to pay you for your time if that is okie with you. I live in anna nagar by the way.

Dear mate... i know you would be surprised but the truth is, i've lived in chennai for quite a while but i cant speak, read or write tamil without enormous difficulty. But thanks for showing the helping spirit. Keeps me believing in you guys ... :p

isn't there anyone willing to teach me? I would be glad if someone would come forward and just teach me the basics like in a week or two. not much. And as mentioned before, I would like to compensate any which way I can, either monetary or otherwise.. i would not mind coming to where you are. i don't mind if you want to come to where I am.

And please, I'm desperate. I hate windows or anything MS related. And i wanna break free. Please help me learn Ubuntu. I would be very grateful.

hi only the installation can pose problems to you. if you know a little about partitions you can do it yourself. else ask your hardware vendor to do it for you. there is nothing that you cant do in ubuntu, if you can get by with windows. cli etc are great but not a must to work with. you can simply click through most of your applications as in windows.

Its not about getting by with windows even though the choice might there. its just that i don't want to. i've had it.

i've decided to embrace linux and ubuntu. i'm already pretty good with windows so i'm not a complete noob.

But i would rather still learn it from someone just for a week just to get past learning the basics of using the terminal and couple of other things i take for granted in windows. After that I can learn by myself. This is my 3rd time coming back to linux and this time i've decided to stay.

i know you might be wondering that i can learn by myself and yes, i have. a little. but still i come across things i don't understand. its for that that it would be cool if someone could teach me, jus for a day or few hours

nowadays you dont need to know cli to work with ubuntu or any linux distro for that matter. i dont know cli but i still work with it comfortably once you start working you can downlaod titorials and try it out in the terminal but i do understand your need to get taught by someone. if you get someone fine. otherwise dont bother. tv

Dear friend, thanks for your reply. Like i said I do not understand tamil that very well. But none the less, i so badly want to learn linux and so I took it to my friend who can read tamil very well. he translated to me whatever you wrote in tamil.

I'm glad you are willing to accept me in your linux meetings. And yes, i'm in chennai. I would very much be interested in attending the meetings. Just let me know the place and time and duration I will be there.

I think it would be better if you could install VMWare in windows and try Ubuntu in that first. Play around for a few days. And when you are comfortable using it, do a direct installation. That was how I got into Ubuntu.

Hi, The best way is to bite your tongue. Seriously if some one were to teach you you will become and carry forward a part of the other. Its safe for you to sped sme time with the how tos. Please do post when you are in dire straits. PM when your are really in a bad shape. All the best. Abhi Kalyan

dear mate, the thing is im very good with windows and therefore i can find my way thru ubuntu.

Infact i have kubuntu already installed on my computer. But i want to use kubuntu as effectively as ive been using windows.

i know the only way to do that is to keep using ubuntu. But a start in the right direction definitely helps...dont it ;)

i definitely plan on seeking the help of the community when im faced with specific issues. But before that, if someone can teach me, i could save a lot of frustration.

you seem to want to talk so shoot your questions ASAP

But [please keep them one at a time. It easier if you stick to one single thread and load all your questions there. Do notify when you do that. There is loads of help All the best

dont worry, just do what i say: first go to ubuntu.com go to the help section read whatever you want if you dont understand something, skip that sentence and try to understand the rest. search, search, search for what you dont know youll get the answer

try to install ubuntu. you may fail. try again and again. youll get it. youll be happy. if you cant understand anything, dont just get disheartened. hunt, search and read. browse as much help manuals as you can. then, you wil get used to it. itll b really easy then. if you still need some support, then ask somebody. *be patient till the end*

i am 15 myself and i installed it easily and i dont have any issues. i just dunno to setup my net connection in ubuntu and i believe i can do that easily if i take some time and work on it.

never get disappointed and never lose your patience. keep going!
