As of now we have 4 members. 3 of us are located in Lexington and I believe that the other is from Richmond.
Ubuntu is addictive isn't it.
I'm one of the Lexingtonians mentioned above. I admit I am new to the whole Linux scene, which has provided a unique experience for etank since I bug him 3-4 times a day with Linux questions!
Never-the-less, I can see some great potential for Ubuntu and Linux as a whole and can't wait to learn more and see where it all goes!

I've been using Ubuntu since the demise Warty Warthog, and I've almost loved it ever since. With the growing privacy invasions from, and my general distrust/hatred of Microshaft, I was looking for a good replacement OS so I would not be forced to eventually upgrade to Vista. My general experience with Ubuntu has been overwhelmingly positive.
It's nice to see the Ubuntu community growing like it has been! I bought the Official Ubuntu book and have been reviewing it for several weeks.
I'm curious to learn what these local groups are about, aside from the general promotion of Ubuntu.

Well, for the official info check out https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LoCoTeams. My view of a LoCo team is this. We are here to promote Linux (Ubuntu) and educate the community around of us of alternatives to closed source software. In addition to that we get together online and in person to discuss what we are learning and teach each other.
We plan to do activities like install fests and also attend conferences that are in the relative area.

I'm curious how many CDs can be ordered for free for local distribution events? Who pays for these CDs? I will soon be delivering flyers door to door for a book promotion/sale (and several other products) and I'd be more than willing to drop in some Ubuntu propaganda along with this teams' info (for free local support!). It may be another month or two when it gets warmer, though. :roll:

Here is a page that describes the process https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LoCoGettingApproved. This is definitively one of the goals that we have as a team. The thing that we are working on now is what types of activities are we going to do. Basically we have to show that we are active in the community. Once we have that part we will submit the application to become an approved team. We are going to discuss some of this on Thursday in the irc meeting.

Checking in from Georgetown, Scott Co. I just joined up on the Launchpad site. I got started with Linux just back in September, with Ubuntu being my only distro thus far (switched to Kubuntu starting with Edgy). I had read a little bit about LUG's and was planning on trying to find out whether there's one based around here. I was pleasantly surprised when I scrolled to the bottom of the front page in Ubuntu Forums (not really expecting to find anything of significance) when I saw that there's one based so close to me. I'm looking forward to the IRC chats as well as the "real world" meetings once they get sorted out.
I live in far Western Kentucky near LBL. A little town called Benton. Just joined the group, and Ubuntu for that matter. Still trying to learn my way around Linux. Installed Ubuntu 6.06 and Fedora Core 6 at the same time. So. I've been spending most of my time logged in to the beginner forum.

Hey guys. I'm from Lewisport, KY (Hancock County, near Owensboro). I started using Ubuntu last semester after my Windows crashed. Since I didn't have the recovery CD, a Linux guru in my dorm at UK suggested Ubuntu, and so far, it's been a pretty reasonable replacement. I've since transferred to Middle Tennessee State, but there is a LUG group here. Anyways, nice to see others from Kentucky using Ubuntu as well.

Oh btw 34yrs old, live off of nicholasville rd in southpoint subdivision. Big time BF2142 player and soon to be TF2 player. My brother and I rent a bunch of servers out of DC and host a site called egokillers.com. It's currently being revamped for the big release of TF2!

Never noticed there were so many Ubuntu users in Kentucky. Anyway, I'm a Ubuntu user from the Louisville Area. :) I got into Ubuntu in August 2006, gave up on getting my Wireless card to work on Ubuntu for a couple months, then finally got a re-gained interest in it since August when I got my eMachines. Just Today I finally got my New Wireless Card, and got it hooked up and working in Linux Ubuntu.
Btw, this is my first post ever on the Ubuntu Forums using Linux Ubuntu.

I live in a little place called Manchester in south eastern KY. I'm fairly new to Linux and to Ubuntu. I initially went for the Suse distro, but got frustrated and reinstalled windows after I couldn't get Wine set up to play a few games and to use Krystal Audio (was not introduced to Audacity at the time). I really liked the extensive flexibility Linux offered though. I decided to try out Ubuntu after I recently got a virus and almost lost a few gigs of data in Win 2K. =P While using windows, I mainly used open source apps anyway (Firefox, Gimp, Gaim, Nvu, Audacity, FileZilla, etc.), so Linux was the next logical progression I suppose. Win 2K is way out of date, and I don't want to waste $200 on getting a copy of Win XP when 2K is just as good, and have no intrest in Vista period! I hate how Microsoft is increasingly choking user rights with DRM and "genuine windows advantage" and such rubbish; not to mention being so non-supportive of web standards. *Kicks them in the teeth* Anyway, I plan on getting a laptop soon and Ubuntu will be my choice of OS. I'll give details on the experience. =)
Are there any programmers here? I'm interested in learning a few languages.
Awesome. :) I am using Windows XP on my newer PC, and Ubuntu on my old Dell. Why? Cause I wanna make sure things go well in Ubuntu before throwing out XP. Plus, I may wait till that Emulator thing in Feisty Fawn comes out. (Cause I'm a big shockwave user, and by the looks of it, Adobe isn't making Shockwave for Linux soon)
Yeah, I'll probably end up going the VMware route also. I had Flash MX installed on my old system, and since there isn't an open source option for Flash animation that's basically my only choice. =/ I read somewhere that Adobe is making the Flash ActionScript language open source though.....
Hope so. And I hope they end up making shockwave for Linux as well.

Heh, my first post here and it's in the Kentucky forum..and there are many more Ubuntu users than what I would have thought from Kentucky. Maybe I think that because of the county I live in...Anyway, I live in Lincoln County (I'm not saying which city, though, not confortable enough). I've been using Linux (in general) for about 2 years now (most is with Ubuntu). Unfortunately, I wouldn't be able to go to any actual meetings, but I can learn IRC and do it that way.

I live in Cincinnati, but go to school in Northern KY (Thomas More), been using Ubuntu since Hoary I think, at least Breezy. I am a kubuntu user and hang out on freenode in #kubuntu, #ubuntu-ohio, and now #ubuntu-ky.
I live and attend school (BCTC currently) in Lexington. I'm looking forward to getting more involved in the community of Ubuntu since there is a local group. I currently use Xubuntu on both my computers and have been using Ubuntu since Warty (though I was still dual booting back then). I experimented with a few different distros, but Ubuntu gave the best experience and so I have been wandering between the different flavors of that. I think I've found what I want in Xubuntu, so I'll say that's my distro of choice for now. While I'm certainly no hacker when it comes to resolving problems I know enough to keep my own computers running and I hope to learn more.

Paducah area here. And I assumed I was the only one in western KY using ububtu. See what happens when you get arrogant. Bad thing is I'm a truck driver. Don't know what state I'll be in on any given tuesday. Home every weekend. Love to attend a convention or weekend install / tech party. Would like to join but don't wannna be a dead beat member. Might make a joint account. Wife lives here and wants to expand her linux exposure. Anything we can do in Paducah area just let us know. P.s. very interested in distributed computing. would like to compress dvd and mpeg3 to xvid rapidly on a few computers.
Just joined the group this evening and I'm from the Crestwood, KY area. I started using Linux in 2002 with an install of Caldera 2.3 I had around the house. Next I tried Mandrake 9.0 and used that for over a year. I wasn't smart enough to get Debian installed, so I tried Libranet 2.0 and that was great. Today I have working installs of Libranet 2.8, Mepis 3.3, Mepis 3.4, Dapper, and Edgy on various machines. Unfortunately I'm not a programmer; just someone who can follow instructions to get things running.
My main machine is the Mepis 3.3 box. It runs 24/7, and in nearly 2 years of operation, has been rebooted only 3 times (all due to power outages). I've built all my computers except for the laptop.
I'm not brilliant, but hopefully I can help out from time to time. Being retired gives me more time to play with Linux. A big thumbs-up to the n+1 guys who helped me get started in Linux years ago.

Hello everyone. I am from Bowling Green and I have been using Linux since about 1998. Started with RedHat, moved to Mandrake when they forked off of RedHat and finally transitioned to Ubuntu last year when 6.06 came out. I have been running Ubuntu 6.06 on my desktop since. (I also have a Mac laptop running OSX.)

Near Elizabethtown KY. I first tried Ubuntu in 11/05 but didn't have too much luck with the modem so I didn't install it. I did eventually get it to work with the modem, but the updates and downloads were too much at 56K. When I finally got DSL in my location I got interested again. I knew Vista was on the horizon and ready to K.O. XP, and it just made me mad that I have a perfectly good P2 computer that wouldn't run well because I lost my Win98 CDs. So I got a dual boot running on my P4 3.06ghz Dell with XP, then installed it on the P2 too. I got involved with the local Linux User Group too. Nobody there uses Ubuntu or any of its derivitives. I still use the dual boot XP with Ubuntu because there are still a lot of programs there I use,
I think I've been to 95% of the places people here say they are from (including West Liberty and Benton). I just don't remember ever going to Eminence. :popcorn:
I prefer not to dual-boot, thats why i stick with XP on a different computer.

I have been running Ubuntu desktop for about 2 weeks now. Only been using Linux overall for 1 month or so. Went from WinXP PRO to ZenWalk (1 week) to MEPIS (1 week) and now Ubuntu desktop (2 weeks).
ZenWalk hated my network card. And I'm to new and paranoid to go around tweaking config files to get it to work.
MEPIS (yes I know its based on Ubuntu) hated my sound card and graphics card.
Ubuntu I have had no hardware issues as of yet, no need to config anything or install extra drivers. Nice!

I'm from lex-vegas! I'm pretty new to Linux and Ubuntu, although i'm not a programmer (thinking about learning it) i come from a hard windows background. mostly delt with programs and why windows was causing them to shut down/ also basic help for friends and small business. but hopefully i will never have to deal with that on ubuntu!
NKY Ubuntu user here, more specifically Fort Mitchell. Just moved up here from MS. I stumbled upon this forum just doing my usual feed reading. Pretty cool to see such an active linux community around here. At work I support mostly Red Hat and SuSE systems as far as Linux goes. I'm also an avid Mac OS User, and I have Ubuntu running through Parallels on my Macbook Pro. I also have Feisty running on an older laptop at home, and I'm definitely pleased with the way it's going.
Ubuntu is definitely the easiest distro to work with in terms of stability and usability. It's amazing once you get the feel of a linux system how easy everything really is. :)

Hi siralphred. For joining the team go to https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-kentucky and click on the Join Team link. For IRC I would recommend starting out with XChat. Here is a nice tutorial on getting started https://help.ubuntu.com/community/XChatHowto. I would recommend the regular XChat over the XChat-Gnome but here is a video that may help some too http://screencasts.ubuntu.com/Installing_and_Using_XChat-Gnome. We are in the #ubuntu-kentucky channel. Welcome. Yeah, it can be tough to completely break away from Windows. It will take some time, but I'm sure you can do it.
I'm from Madisonville, in particular, Anton, right out side the city to the north. It's about time that the ubuntu users in kentucky jumped out of the woods. I'ved been using ubuntu sence I got a ShipIT Cd in May of 2006, Iv'ed used ubuntu, then in June of 2006 I swiched to Edubuntu 6.06 LTS Because of the LTSP thing, (I got old PC's that can't run ubuntu.) It makes a very nice server to. I have been using Edubuntu 6.06 LTS sence then & have only midifyed some libraries & gnome xml files. I am one of the co-founders of the MADisonville, KEntuckY (MadKey) Linux User Group, it's going through an peroid of inactivity, so we are moving websites. It is a nice felling that there are other ubuntu users in this great state for which we live in. I know some shell scripting & know how to change that boot image (well at least in Ubuntu 5.10 & 6.06) to what ever image you want. I also have made *some* live cd with the group Our little LUG new site isn't finished yet. We also could use some suggestions on our site's links page We use Nvu & OpenOffice for webpages, GIMP for images, & scribus for newsletter. I hope to get to know the ubuntu-kentucky group better :-)

I'm a student from Berea College doing an internship up in Frankfot. I've been an on and off user of Unbuntu/ Kunbuntu and I've always been fond of the usability and UI. I've been programming for about 4 years with some kernel work in nachOS , c++, java, xml, and ASP.NET .
I've snooped around the links provided throughout the forum and I still can't get a grasp of the development that goes on and the contributions to linux community. Could someone give me a brief overview or description of what the Ky team is up to?

GREAT! I am sooo glad to be on board. I'm from Harlan, yea we have computers down here and if our critters run fast enough on the wheel we get power, well enough to get this post out. Seams like bears have more stamina, but the weight issue is a problem, u know...

Hey - I'm in Winchester, KY but I'm from Lexington. I'm new to Linux and loaded both Debian and Ubuntu to try out and I could not be happier with Ubuntu. The GUI is smooth, it is easy to use and it has so many useful programs. I set up a dual boot system with two hard drives. Originally, I tried to dual boot with both Windows XP and Ubuntu on the same drive with different partitions and had some funky issues but all is good at this point. I hope to contribute somehow instead of just asking ten billion questions - but I wouldn't hold my breath..;] "I will NOT be force-fed Windows Vista"

For a client that behaves almost exactly like mIRC, you can install XChat from the repositories. Even if you don't need help with anything, we're always good for some generic nerdy banter.

Hi this is Rogan. I live in eminence Ky work in a Fiber NOC in louisville where i have slipped in about 15 installs of ubuntu on our secondary non-corporate boxes for use in troubleshooting network issues.
i have a gutsy server at home i host my website www.hollygarth.net (read as shameless plug) on but this is a satellite connection thru hughes.net (it has at least a 600ms-4200ms latency depending on weather, a 400M FAP, and i can not get rdns setup thru the ISP but it works)
I use gutsy on my laptop and only have a few installation querks but nothing major.
still looking for a good tacacs program for linux that is comparable to cisco acs and have looked at jffnms, but having install issues.
look foward to seeing what developes here and maybe i can help

Hmmm, I should have posted on this thread a while ago when I joined the team. I'm located in Northern Kentucky, a transplant to the region originally from Indiana (West Lafayette and Bloomington). Sorry I haven't been that involved, simply can't get away for face-to-face meetings in Lexington.
Another Lexingtonite here, although that is just for school...originally from Berea which is 40 minutes south of Lexington.

I am in Columbia, which is south-central, about 2 hours from Louisville or Lexington. (or as I sometimes say, "two hours from anyplace you'd rather be.") New to Linux (about a year at this point?) but enjoying the experience! I'll have to visit the Wiki and find out more about all of you. A KY group would really be nice!
Hello all! I am located in Harlan. I have played around with Linux since the late 80's, but have used it exclusively since 2001. I started out with Redhat, Mandrake, Yellowdog, then discovered Ubuntu. I have used Ubuntu exclusively since 2006.
I use 6.06 on an Imac at work, as well Xubuntu on another computer used for some light office tasks. Everything works well except for the printing. I have to copy everything I want to print to a Windows machine on the network and then print from there. At home I have 6.10 on my desktop, but just installed Debian on my laptop. It is an older machine and I was running 6.10, but since the support ran out and the repositories don't work any more I had to make a change, so I decided to put Debian on it.
Glad to see so many people in KY making the switch to Linux.

I'm Campbell, very close to Cincy. Looking at it right now, as a matter of fact, from my front porch. And they say that wireless doesn't work in Ubuntu. Bah! :)
Well, put down one more newbie in Somerset, KY. Seriously new to Ubuntu and Linux. Just installed it on a new Toshiba notebook. The notebook came with Vista Home Premium and I didn't like it much. Always been curious about Linux, so I thought I'd finally try it. So far so good, I like it.
I don't known anyone else using Ubuntu or any Linux, so I'm getting to learn it on my own (well with the help here and other sources on the internet).

Alternately, you can come to our main website, http://www.bglug.net and http://forums.bglug.net to learn more and to join the LUG. There's a launchpad group, but we really don't do anything with it. If you request to join that group, I'll approve you, but it's unused.

I have switched distros many times, but this time around I am staying with Ubuntu. First time I tried Ubuntu was 5.04, at that time my sata hard drive was not yet supported by the kernel. I had my first success with ubuntu 6.04, currently using 9.04 and have been loving it :)

I was born in Lexington on Delaware Ave. I went to Arlington Elementary School, Lexington Jr High, graduated Henry Clay in 1955. I have been using some form of Linux (exclusively) since Yggdrasil (a source distribution, if memory serves.) I think that was around 1993 but I'm not sure off the top of my old head. Prior to that, I used a proprietary distro of a 16 bit unix. I was not then and have never been a great fan of that other popular OS. I now use Ubuntu exclusively on my network of computers. I will check into joining the team. I now live in Richmond and would appreciate contact from other users in Richmond commuting area. email works best for me as a contact medium. Go, FOSS, Go!

Maysville, Ky here. I've ran linux for about eight years now. We had a LUG but it's disbanded now. I lost interest when I saw that our LUG "recommended" Xandros... That just gives me chills.
