Ubuntu as Gaelige (Ubuntu in Irish)

If you would like to start translating straight away it could not be easier, all you need is a Launchpad Account, and simply fill Irish words in beside their English counterparts. If you do not know a word, you can skip it or if you are unsure, you can have your translation reviewed by another contributor. To start, see: https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/gutsy/+lang/ga

Old translations for Ubuntu can be re-used in Gutsy and rolled out as updates. All contributions are very welcome, and your support means Ubuntu can break into sectors where it is chronically underused in Ireland, such as Government and Education (most of which still require some level of Irish).

Based on that last sentence alone, it's better than mine! However, I know what it's like. I would have thought most single-word items would be fairly trivial until I asked a knowledgeable friend to translate north-north-east. :-s

The key thing is that, really, not everything needs to be translated to make a serious difference. There are thousands of error messages and the like that *can* be translated, but I would consider very low priority. The normal messages, buttons, titles, etc that appear all the time are what should be focussed on. Unfortunately, there doesn't appear to be any way to identify which those are. At least Launchpad lists packages in order of priority so the main ones are done first.

Well I had to use a dictionary to see what the word for translation was but I'm quite proud that I remembered the rest of it. :)

I don't actually speak any Irish but I think that an Irish version should be available. Whether it's used daily by anyone or not is another question but there are more reasons than that to make it happen.

Having Ubuntu available in as many languages as possible is a good goal to have.
