Dumb Sabayon question?? Gentoooooo

Ok Ok. I know Ubuntu is based on Debian, but it is quite different. This might also be because of the foundation the distros are built upon...

But I am curious about Sabayon's relationship to Gentoo. DOES SABAYON EXIST?!?!!?!??

lol... dumb question. It obviously exists. But what I mean is... an installed + updated Gentoo system is versionless. It is just Gentoo. That is all. When Sabayon is installed and updated, is it basically just the same as a spankingly new updated Gentoo box? Is there a point in calling it Sabayon anymore? I know Ubuntu is always Ubuntu and will never become Debian, but the setup for that is totally different. From the little I know of Gentoo, it appears to be another story.

Valid question, Sabayon for the most part is Gentoo, simply precompiled Gentoo, but the difference is that the Sabayon devs often write updated to almost everything, including the Kernel...they also include some parts from Slackware, KNOPPIX, etc. etc.

Sabayon is to Gentoo like Ubuntu is to Debain.:popcorn:

I think this can be said for a lot of distros, Debian/Ubuntu, rPath/Foresightlinux, etc. For Sabayon, they are creating some unique applications, like the 3D installation chooser, and this upcoming diddy...

You could make the comparison that Gentoo is to Sabayon as Ubuntu is to gNEWsense - but then again you could probably make a case for any such comparison. Sabayon is a different distro, maintined by different people, but it uses the exact same package tree (or rather, "portage tree") as Gentoo - where as Debian uses one and Ubuntu uses another (or that's my understanding, anyway). It's my opinion that Sabayon and Gentoo are more intricatly linked that Ubuntu and Debian - you'll far more often find people on Sabayon sites directing you to Gentoo documentation than you will find people on Ubuntu sites directing you to Debian documentation. But, there's also the point that Sabayon is a bit younger than Ubuntu, and Sabayon is more in line with the Gentoo spirit of individuality - in other words, the relationship of any distro to any of it's derivitives is unique.

First of all, Sabayon will always be Sabayon and Gentoo will always be Gentoo. If it isn't like that, they would have same names. One could say that Sabayon is Gentoo and more, or just less of Gentoo, depends what you want from your distro. It isn't combination of packages what make distro to be called like it is. Slackware and Ubuntu can have same packages installed, but they will never be same distro. What I think, use everything you need, don't use what you don't need and do not bother how is your distro called. Gentoo is metadistro anyway.

Thank you for all of the replies. I will be honest and say that the main reason I was confused is because Gentoo is 'versionless.' If it wasn't for that, I wouldn't have asked. :) I just wanted to see how distros, like Sabayon, that base themselves on Gentoo fit into that system.

All what a Linux distro really is, is the Linux kernel with a package manager and some packages. Sabayon is good if you want to get your Gentoo installation up an running quickly. You don't have to worry about video cards, kde (takes forever to compile) etc, etc.

no, seriously, its a comfortable way to install gentoo, once installed you can recompile every package as you wish, basically is a gentoo.
