Customization of Ubuntu loading screen

Does anyone know if its possible to customize the screen that comes up after the login screen but before the desktop? It is the screen that has a little graphical view of the basic programs that ubuntu is loading.

I'm not sure what this is called, so most of my searching to date has been fruitless.

Any help or advice, especially the technical name for the this screen, would be appreciated.

Its called the "splash screen" and instructions to change it can be found here http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=375950&highlight=boot+splash+change

When installed it appears under system/preferences/splash screen menu

Actually, I'm interested in change the screen after the login screen. I've already customized the screen before the login :)

You have to install "gnome-splashscreen-manager"

then just use any .png I believe

System -> Preferences -> Splash Screen

The splash screen is the one after the login screen, that says ubuntu and has the status of nautilus, startup progs, etc... The configuration window for it is the program I mentioned above. That thread is a bit confusing in that regard.

The login screen is called the gdm theme. The screen I think your interested in s=is the gnome splash screen The screen that you choose kernels is the grub splash screen The screen after the grub but before the gdm login screen is called usplash

Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! That list of definitions explains a lot. It also explains why I keep getting confused about what is a splash screen.

Have you seen the site http://www.gnome-look.org

It has some splash screens and GDM Themes

I swear their used to be a option by default to change the splash screen, made it so much easier to distinguish what screen was what. I dont know where or why it disappeared though.

Yeah I have, in fact I was just looking at it :)

The site makes more sense now, with the knowledge that there are different types of splash screens.

I've always wanted to know how to do this.
