Joining the Beginners Team (BT) :

First, thank you for you interest in the Beginners Team. Although the focus is on new users, this team is a resource for all members of the Ubuntu Forums and greater Ubuntu Community.

_Working with the team_ :

To some extent on/off the team is somewhat artificial. The option of working with our team is open to all Ubuntu Forum members, either via helping new users, posting ideas on this forum, contributing documentation targeting new users, etc. You are also welcome to join us on our irc channel :

• Use the Beginners Team to communicate with the Beginners Team. How can we better assist new users ?
• Raise awareness of the availability or our team as a potential resource on ABT and GH.
• You are always welcome to submit suggestions, how-to's, feedback to the Beginners Team to assist us in our work.
• _Please note_ : The BT forums is not the best place for technical assistance.

_Joining the team_ : Welcome Padawan

Joining the team is a nice way to deepen your involvement with the Ubuntu Community. Active participants should be willing to dedicate 5-10 hours / week to the team and our various activities. We are a community within Ubuntu dedicated to assisting new users transition to Ubuntu.

• History with the Ubuntu forums. If you are new to the forums and would like to help start by familiarizing yourself with the layout of the forums and how to navigate them, search for information, use [noparse] and [/noparse] tags, etc. Start helping new users on ABT.
• Please review the Ubuntu code of conduct. Respect, give it, get it, got it ?
• irc is currently the best method to become involved with the beginner team. The channel is somewhat informal and a place to feel more connected with the Ubuntu community. Knowing/learning irc has become essential to team members. If you do not know how to irc, ask for help.[INDENT]Beginner Team IRC Channel is on Freenode , but has moved to #ubuntu-beginners[/INDENT]
• Tell us about yourself. I would like to encourage you to join Wiki and Launchpad and establish a "home page". A home page is generated for you automatically when you register, but it is up to you to populate. Do not feel you need to be a developer to join the Beginner Team, and do not chase your tail. Simply start a wiki page and tell us about yourself. You may use the following examples as "templates" and as always, feel free to ask for assistance.

• As with the forums, there is no absolute Ubuntu knowledge requirement, only that you are interested in assisting new users. We do have "the quiz" , a set of questions where you can demonstrate your Ubuntu prowess, :lolflag:.
• Once you have established a rapport with the team you will be "nominated" and added to the agenda at the next team meeting. Attendance to the meeting is encouraged.
• There is almost overwhelming interest in the Beginners Team ie join requests. Please proceed with the above steps rather then waiting for some kind a a response to join requests.

_Current needs_ :

• Our current need is to recruit someone interested and experienced with a wide range of hardware.
• We would like to identify a few users familiar with KDE/XFCE and alternate WM (*box,IceWm, etc).

Hey whats up? I would like to help I can do 5-10 hours a week. I'm using feisty fawn ubuntu 7.04. I just took my comptia A+ and Networking+ certifications. I think I can help out a bit as I'm not (officially)working right now. I've been into this stuff from the rip. Any questions about networking or hardware I think I may be able to help.

have experience with xfce, but not on forums as often as i'd like, if i can help with anything let me know

I might not be able to do 5-10 hrs a week, but i am familiar with not only Gnome/KDE, but i also use Fluxbox, XFCE, and Enlightenment (and have most WMs installed). I already made a join request. I have some experience with hardware too and hope to help some new Ubuntu users become Ubuntu Experts.

Hey, I'd like to help out, if I can. I can do the hours on the forum, and I just started using IRC. I havn't been using Ubuntu that long (since May), but I've reinstalled it plenty of times, so I'm getting good at the basics :)

I'm using KDE right now, and I'm gonna use XFCE on an old machine I'm getting. So... let me know? :)

Hi. I might be able to help for about 5-8 hours per week. My experience is with wireless, connecting static and dhcp servers, etc. I'm not a linux geek but I have linux experience and started ubuntu since 5.04 release. Actually I'm upgrading all my boxes to Gutsy tribe 5 (all of them) as I see it is stable enough from my point of view and needs. My mother language is Spanish so I can also help the this community if desired, but I prefer English as I'm more familiar with English techy stuff. Regards Luis

This sounds like a good idea. I've used CentOS, SuSE, Ubuntu, Xubuntu, Kubuntu, FedoraCore, and I've worked with all of these on all wireless networks as well as wired ones. Every trouble I've had with my distros has been solved, so I should know how to fix most user problems, if not I have no problem asking for help. I could devote 12+ hours a week to being on the forums. I also have seen and fixed permission problems, hard drive errors, and especially reconfiguring the xconf file. Right now I am using Xubuntu 7.04 on my home built computer.

It would be great to help out new users adapting to Ubuntu or other linux distros, as I was once a Windows and Mac user, but have finally found my home using linux.

I am an active participant on the ubuntuforums, and I am currently running Ubuntu Gutsy 7.10

I've been using Ubuntu for quite some time now, and Linux is the only operating system that I use any more. I have been using computers for well over 20 years. So I have a great deal of experience with computers in general.

I used to have a multiboot system with Window$ and Linux, but I got rid of Window$ all together, and now I run a pure Linux environment.

I am currently using an Acer 5050-3371 with wifi that uses the Atheros chipset.

I'm considerably interested in joining the team. It wouldn't make a huge difference, as I spend a significant amount of time in ABT/GH/DE/etc forums answering what questions I can. It'd just be nice. ;)

I'm familiar with most/all current hardware, and I've used several WM's (*box, gnome, kde, xfce, DWM, awesome, etc). I've tried my hand at just about everything. I'm not sure how valuable my knowledge may be, but I'm more than willing to offer it.

Perhaps I am not that experienced yet as you guys above me but I am pretty active in the beginners and general help forums and I like to delve into interesting issues.

I am running a website which focuses on my beginner problems with Ubuntu.Furthermore I write a big Gimp documentation and tutorials for it.

Currently I am running a Xubuntu 7.10 system and a Linux Mint Daryna system.

I also would like to join your team because I am somewhat "near" to the users who just recently switched over or are trying to switch over to Linux Ubuntu.

I speak German, Polish fluently and a little bit of English ...:) so I can look over the borders of this forum so to speak.

Hey guys, I've been around here for the last 9 months or so, been using linux for a few years, unix at school for a few more years, and computers forever. I'm a Computer Engineering and Science major (graduating in May) so I'm familiar with programming and HW/SW design and implementation as well. I also have experience in a moderate to large range of computer hardware and different systems. I was going to request to join last summer while I was working IT, but I delayed because I felt my Fall schedule could get in the way, so I postponed my request to join the team, but now I'm interested in getting more involved for sure. I'm also interested in the Unanswered Posts team if that is still around. I hope you're interested in taking me aboard! Peace.

I am strictly linux at home, and a dual (WinXP) booter on my family's machines, but that's our little secret. Been a linux user several years now, and fairly versed on hardware installation, both open and proprietary. Currently using KDE 3 & 4, but familiar with Gnome and even enlightenment (E17) I want to help others, since I have been so helped by this great community. In short, I have 2 inspiron laptops, they are 18 months and 6 months old, XP SP2 and Vista respectively.

However, I would prefer to start with the old IBM PII, (It has got windows 98 on it.) down in the basement and then with a bit more of a clue, attempt the install on the laptops.

In exchange for your time, I would document the "project" which should give other punters a bit more of a clue as to how much time they should be putting aside for each step.

The best way to try Ubuntu is on your own. Burn off the CD (I would suggest Xubuntu for your PII) and see how it goes. If you have any questions or problems that you can't find answers to then you can post on the Absolute Beginners Forum. But we'd love to hear how it goes.

I'd love to join. I can be on the forms 5-10 hours a week, considering I'm using the internet at school (rarly at home because of my Winmodem).

I am still learning how to use Ubuntu, but i'm on my way. I'm only 15 and have a sufficent Windows help history, still working on the hardware side of things.

I would love to join the team.

Been using Ubuntu since Warty and now up to Hardy, always with the same laptop (Intel Pentium 4 CPU 2.53GHz with 216 RAM) - i know i need an update. Never a clean install except the Warty and been thru Xubuntu and back to Ubuntu. I even used awn (with xcompmgr of course)

But I reach a point where i researched so much to get everything done that now i want to help the ubuntu community and help someone use this great OS.

Not a big fan of the command line although i can use it.

The beginners team sound like a great project.

I'd be thrilled to help! I'm a natural since I enjoy helping and writing (which is kinda my job, actually).

Although I can't really help "technically" due to my newbie status, I can sure help promote plain and simple explanations, clarify stuff, foster community spirit (which is already not lacking!!!) and so on. I do have 17 years in advertising, communications and the media to atone for (lol).

Well, as you learn more and can help just hang on the forums. Most people don't have a problem with a knowledgeble user taking charge of the situation to get a solution for them, so you don't need to worry about coming off as a troll. Now that I think about it, some of the best help you could give would seem slightly troll-esque on other forums and tactless in real life. But that's what they need.

So just keep learning, keep your enthusiasm, and keep helping. You're already doing a good job. Your focus on the new user is shared by most of the forum, and especially the administration. We all can help make sure this is a wonderful place to learn. We all started somewhere, so there's no reason to be hurtful because someone doesn't know.

I would like to join. Not sure if I'll be able to dedicate the requested number of hours, but I'll sure try.

Here's a bit about myself:

A physicist by vocation, I am a passionate computer geek since approx. 1993. Been using anything and everything, including Linux these last 4+ years or so.

I'm also a reasonable programmer, with good knowledge of quite a few languages, mostly numerical computing (part of the job) and web.

I have used and tried at least 30-40 distros, settling down on Ubuntu and RedHat as my favorites.

I have passed a Linux System Administrator course. I also hold the international certification LPIC-1 and am working on LPIC-2, second exam left. After that ULP.

I maintain a website, with many topics, but also including a very broad section on computers - Linux in particular.

I pride myself in being thorough and methodical. If you read tutorials on the web, you might have come across my GRUB, Kubuntu, PCLinuxOS, and other tutorials, most of which are very popular and rate highly on the web. Type "grub tutorial" or "kubuntu tutorial" in Google and you'll see.

I believe in co-existence and harmony of operating systems, not necessarily this or that. I strive to allow everyone to enjoy everything. Ubuntu, RedHat, Windows, anything goes, although I think Ubuntu is probably the most sensible choice for the average joe.

I'm eager to assist new Ubuntu users in any way that I can. I've been using Ubuntu for almost 3 years now, and have tried different window managers like icewm, fluxbox, and others, but I seem to like icewm the best, though I am lacking in knowledge on how to get certain things going in it that I need to use it primarily.

I enjoy coming to the forums and searching the new posts and trying to help people when they have a problem that I think I have the right answer for.

The overall experience since I first signed up here has been fantastic. The support here is top notch, and I'd really like to be a part of it.

Where is the team forum? I went to the URL and posted what I posted on this thread. How do I join the IRC and what is IRC? I got pidgin and added the IRC but I don't know what is my user name and password or what to put for the server.

I might be able to help you here. No-one else has much experiance with Pidgin + IRC.

Open Manage, -> Then click Add.... You be greeted with an Add Account window.

Click the drop down list and select IRC (Should be to Speech bubbles). Type a user name to your liking (Once you sign up to UbuntuForums, they don't allocate IRC users) Also, have a password. This will prompt every time you log in (just to be secure).

Don't change the server name because UbuntuForums BT IRC is there, along with other Ubuntu channels. Now type an Nickname (Alias) that will appear every time you log on. (These setps are for basic setup)

Now you are logged in. NickServ may popup stating that your user name may be used. (This should not happen)

Okay everything worked okay till I got to to register the user name. I put in /msg nickserv register <your-password> <your-email> on the NickServ and I got this (10:30:24 PM) NickServ: (notice) <me e-mail address> is not a valid email address. Any ideas what I did wrong.

Either you have typed your address incorrectly, someone have already used that address, or NickServ was unable to find your email account.

Try your address again. If you get that same message, try another email address you use.

No luck. I type in /msg nickserv register <word> <word@gmail.com> into the freenode-connect window. I get this <word@gmail.com> is not a valid email address in another messaging tab called NickServ. I am a beginner at this IRC thing.

You don't need the '<' and '>' around the password and email...don't know if you were putting them or not :)

Okay so now I guess I have a account. Then I got a e-mail from freenode Nickname registration with a code. I put the code in so I am registered now. I just don't know how to connect to the beginners team IRC. I am still trying to figure out what this is.

Okay so do I change the server name in pidgin to irc.freenode.net/#ubuntuforums-beginner Or do I type it into the two chat rooms that pop up every time I start pidgin?

You could install Konversation, it's in add remove, and set it up like this:

I am trying out the program right now. It looks like you are part of the Beginners Team. How do you know if you made the team?

You need to talk to bodhi.zazen about joining. Have you seen the sticky in ABT? - http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=848814 This current (the one we are typing in) tells you more about the process as well. Ultimately you need to visit us in IRC, get quizzed, hang out, then after awhile we can approve you to be on the team.

When you log into the IRC, "freenode" will pop-up in a window, keep this open and type "/join #ubuntuforums-beginners"

Can you join the IRC? They can tell you how.

you dont need to study anything. just have a general knowledge of how to help people, a good attitude, and a reasonably good understanding of ubuntu and linux. Talk to bodhi_zazen he asks the questions but first youll need to introduce yourself, preferebly on irc but forums is cool aswell.

The quiz is informal sorta Living2007. Any BT member can ask what they want. Bodhi asks most of the questions tho. Some questions come up again and again tho like how do ya install software on ubuntu and where can ya find help for ubuntu issues. but there is nothing in particular I can tell you to study the quiz is more to see if ya know your way around ubuntu some and to find out what ya do know. Some "geek culture' questions usually also get asked. Check out the IRC channel and get to know the regulars.

Coming on irc for 2 days, adding your name to the nominations list on the wiki then dissapearing for 2 weeks will not get you anywhere, apart from erased from the wiki list and probably frowned upon next time you come back. If you leave your name on the list and wish to be considered for the team, then your presence is required a few times a week at least. If this is not possible it is curtious to let one of the members know, preferebly your mentor/teacher or bodhi. Thanks

There isn't a specific time. If you want to become a member, just follow the outlined steps whenever it works for you. I would mention that going to the IRC is pretty important for prospective members now, since we vote on anyone wanting to join. So getting to know the team and letting them get to know you is a good idea.

Hi, I have been using Ubuntu since Oct 2007, and since then I have learned, Slackware, Fedora, Mandriva, OpenSuse, Arch, and many others. I have experience with different hardware, and with KDE, Gnome, Fluxbox, the terminal, and I try to help whenever I can. I am very interested in joining the beginners team, if anyone could tell me how to log into IRC through Pidgin, I would be much obliged. If Wiki would load, I would feel out my information there too.

What you need to do is create a new account IRC account. Just add a new account like you do with msn or any other IM accounts. Then select IRC and put in a username and password of your choice. Then save it and enable it and you should get two chat windows. Go to the Nick Serv windows and type in ``` /join #ubuntuforums-beginners

My first experience with linux was when a friend gave me a Hoary Hedgehog installation disc to put on an old laptop I had lying around. I was hooked from the beginning, and have used almost every distro out there, including Arch which I have been using exclusively for the last 2 years.

I have recently switched back to Xubuntu, not because I don't still love Arch but because I have had more and more people asking me about linux, and whether or not they should try it. I figured Ubuntu would be the best choice for someone new to linux, for many reasons, including it's ease of installation, being ready to go "out of the box", and the amazing community surrounding it. So I figured if I was going to be recommending Ubuntu, I should probably be using it too.:)

So that's why I am here. I remember how helpful the forums were to me when I got started, so I am would like to give back to an awesome community that has given me so much. I've already met a few of you on IRC, and I'm looking forward to meeting everybody else!

Welcome back. I had a similar experience and also returned to Ubuntu from Arch for very similar reasons.

It sounds like a great many of us have taken a journey to Debian and Arch but come back to Ubuntu for one reason or another.

Hi and yes I believe they mean the distro. Most do a little of distro hopping and then settle on a couple of distro's. :)

We encourage users to distro hop a little bit and see what else is out there. It seems like most come back to Ubuntu because of the great support and ease of use (since it's designed for new users). I've worked on SunOS Solaris UNIX systems, Ubuntu versions since Feisty, Fedora Core and CentOS. I have also spent some time in Red Hat (RHEL to be specific), Mandriva, Puppy Linux, DSL, and am currently working on setting up Gentoo.

That's what I like the best about Ubuntu. Easy for users, but not too dumbed down for the experienced users.

This one hasn't :p I don't distro hop anymore, since I have tried Arch, but I am always here at the community to help and support :)

I need help I don't know very little about computers and downloading operating systems and installing. I have a laptop with windows 98 on that Microsoft have stopped supporting.

I am hoping that Ubuntu operating system will fill the gap but cant find any instructions how to start so thought best to join this forum.

Any help will be appreciated.

this forum is really a team forum (not a support forum) so its much much slower than the support forums. Most of the team communications happen over IRC.

There is nothing to 'write' in Xchat... it is just a place all of us hang out... a way to stay in touch... to discuss the events of the day, give help to other users and get help when you need it.

Hello everyone, just thought I would introduce myself.

I first experienced linux with Dapper Drake. I was interested in trying it for some time, but never bothered installing it. Then finally, I decided to jump in and dual boot it on my Windows box. I found myself steadily leaving WinXP behind. I got to the point that I was only using it for gaming and nothing else. I had migrated my daily computer usage like browsing, email, multimedia, etc to Ubuntu.

Right now I am currently using Hardy and don't plan on switching to Intrepid just yet. I have my box set up just fine for my liking. I even have my son using Hardy with the Edubuntu add-on package.

I am also an active member of the New York State LoCo Team.

I am here because I feel that one of the major reasons I got through my early experience with Ubuntu were the support I received in the forums. That is especially true of the people who "patrolled" the Absolute Beginners forum. Now that I have some experience under my belt, I want to give back to the community that has passed knowledge onto me.

I look forward to helping the community.

I like to join BT if you guys are ok with me.I was using ubuntu from v5.10 and currently I'm using 8.04. I'm ans webmaster and an Network administrator at a reputed company here in Sri Lanka. Well I'm not going to boast about any way I'm the guy who recommended to use Ubuntu or kUbuntu as our default OS for our office PC's and for our new manufactured or in other words assembled PC's. Through that we're trying to increase Ubuntu users here in Sri Lanaka. I've few certificates on IT and IT security. Before becoming an Network administrator I worked as an Hardware technician over 3 yers so I know my way around most hardware problems. I also used some other Linux distributions to like fedora before that RedHat 9, OpenSUSE(I don't like this distro), PCLOS, Enlightenment, freespire etc .. I can't remember all of them right now. And I know lot about windows too 'cos I've to use it in my office environment for not so bright people. Use CentOS as my network server or as my PDC(Primary Domain Controller) looking forward to use Ubuntu as my proxy currently I'm on a windows system and I don't like that. Also I joined this group on 2008 September 'cos I was not used to forums and I didn't had internet at my home now I've internet so I'm a frequent visitor and love this forum. Also why I want to join this forum is that I love to help other people and love to gain knowledge as my signature says I'm like a torrent gathers them and seeds them. well thats all about me hope to here from you soon thanks in advance.

But I do agree. Xchat or (my favorite) Konversation do IRC much better. And if you're wanting to do Google talk, there is a Prism for that now that really works well. Its in Add/Remove too, so go check it out. It's almost as good as the real Google Talk app.

I would be very interested in helping the beginners. I should be able to dedicate 5-10 hours each week. There may be weeks that are exceptions as my job can get a bit crazy sometimes, but overall I should be able to. I have been using Linux off and on for a few years (distros such as Fredora and CentOS as well as Ubuntu), but have been using Ubuntu exclusively for a bit over a year. I believe I could bring something to the table here.

I'm very interested in joining the Beginners Team. I'm already monitoring Absolute Beginner Talk and helping people out where I can. I've been using Debian/Ubuntu since August 2007, and joined the Forums in February 2008 as an Absolute Beginner myself.

Hello. I am very willing to devote at least 5 hours a week or more. Will work weekends :)

1. Our current need is to recruit someone interested and experienced with a wide range of hardware.

I use ubuntu variants on 2 desktops, and 2 laptops.

2. We would like to identify a few users familiar with KDE/XFCE and alternate WM (*box,IceWm, etc).

I am very familiar with XFCE, and some of its shortcomings :) (using it now)

I love Ubuntu and would like to contribute anyway I can, however I have very little experience with the community, so I will be needing guidance. Because of school, I cannot determine a fixed time that I am available, however, I know I have at least 5h/week most of the time.

Are you sure it will void your warrantee? Because that is something that some tech support will say sometimes, but it's rarely true. You should check your copy of your warrantee to see if that's the case. Usually, they mean they won't be giving you tech support for another OS. But the hardware should almost positively still be covered, and if you're not running Windows anyway who cares about tech support for it? :p

And the best Ubuntu support can be found right here anyway!

I have been using Ubuntu since 7.10 and would like to share my knowledge and experience with people. I have become more active in the support forums giving help where I can.

I am a working IT professional fulfilling a web development and Database administrator role with a small development team based in the UK.

hey. im on IRC as tabarnackle also. Me ttending the meetings will be mostly a hit and a miss seeing as i work alot, but i really should start here.

I switched from being windows smart.... to linux about 4 days ago for simplification. and i have indeed gotten that, i find the learning goes fairly quick. the IRC is a great place to troubleshoot! even better than the forums so i can see that as noobs we should be first steered there. it made things so much easier for me. i mean, anyway. im glad i found it. names dave

My mother-tongue is german but i also have some skills in english and polish. I have done a lot of distro-hopping during the last 12-14 years (xBSD, debian, slackware, pld ...). I am using Ubuntu (Jaunty) for my desktop (i686) and my two mobile computers (macbook and leneovo s10e).

so I've finaly arrived here on the beginners team thread....

You suggest starting a "home page" on launchpad.... but how it this going to be linked into the wiki?? or can I start a page in the wiki like bodi.zazen's - or is this what you meant??

I plan to include some wiki pages on the following.

MySQL

Brief setup and configuration Getting some public data and populating a new table with it so as to enable new MySQL users to get straight down to using / understanding the syntax of writing queries, cross referenceing, joining, importing / exporting from files etc. I plan this as I was always "stressed" by the idea of having to "invent" a set of data to populate a table with. Now I know where to find public information that can then be used to quickly get into working with MySQL. I still intend to create a "catalogue" of all our DVD's, CD, video vinyl and tapes (maybe I even have some old beta-max stuff ;) )

PhP.

Again like MySQL using PHP is actually incredibly easy... once you know how, often trying to find the information for performing that little bit of "clever" trickery is a real pain. I hope to bring it all together in a selection of PHP pages with demonstrations and file for working on.... again using publicaly available data.

Other stuff.

I work as a bioinformatician, and I will endeavour to support other new bioinformatics users by creating links to the various sites that we use with brief howto's on their utillisation. I also hope to develop my own tools that I will ultimately share (and support) via this and my own personal web site (if I ever get it up and running that is!:p ).

But I really need to put this onto my launchpad home page, which is currently rather sparse....

I just worked out how to create a wiki page.

navigate to the root wiki page

http://wiki.ubuntu.com/

add in your page title (in my instance my user nickname), and hit the carriage return (enter key).

The site will either take you to the page that you just entered (if it already exists) or ask if you want to create it! So simple it is no wonder that I missed it!

I have been using Ubuntu 9.04 for about a month now and so far I love it. The ubuntu community has left a great impression on me, and I would like to contribute eventually. I still feel like there is a lot more for me to learn though, which is why I would like to join the beginners team.

Specifically, I've been on the forums for around about a year and half. My previous username was napalm brain. I tended not to post often for I wanted to always post something of worth and though I may not have always followed through with that endeavor, I certainly tried. Hi there, my name is Robert Furuglyas. I'm kind of new to Ubuntu and would like to join the Beginner Team.

I don't have a whole lot of Ubuntu experience "yet" but I do have experience building/repairing computers. I even build working systems from old parts I obtain and normally install Ubuntu or LinuxMint on them.

I could use a mentor as well.
