the edition number tells you when the release will be. The next release will be 7.04 meaning 2007, Apr. The current version is 6.10 (released Oct 2006)
The partitioner is supposed to better support Intel Macs because it does not get the partition tables out of sync. however, the current version works on Intel Macs (with a little persuasion) so I don't fully understand the question. If you mean will everything work out of the box, then it will probably be better, but not EVERYTHING. The wifi in macbooks will probably not work until the linux kernel is updated, and the iMacs have a broadcom wifi chipset which has never had much support under linux.
You can find the various release dates [[here]]("http://www.debianadmin.com/ubuntu-704-feisty-fawn-release-dates.html").
I'm following [[this]]("http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=375782") thread regarding Feisty Herd 5 on the MacBook Core 2 Duo. Be warned though, read all the posts before trying it out... some people are loosing data.
I am hoping they plan to work some of those difficulties out before final...
