How will my system handle 3.3?

I'm looking into running Sabayon 3.3 (actually, the DVD iso's 5% downloaded...and counting) but I hear from some users that it will run very slowly on most machines...in particular, one disgruntled user claimed that it ran sluggishly on a 2.0P4 with 1GB RAM.

My machine's an IBM ThinkPad T41 with a 1.6GHz Pentium M, an ATI 7500 (portable) graphics card and 1.5GB RAM. Along with that, I have a typical Atheros card and an 80GB hard disk...what can I expect in therms of:

• Boot times once installed?
• Application performance?
• Compile and install time for software or upgrades?
• KDE performance, with and without Beryl or other 3D effects?

Thanks for any help. I'm hoping I can get this to work for me, and have it going quickly! Also, I hope to install an older (red-yellow type) of Sabayon theme because, well, all-black desktop on an all-black ThinkPad would be awful.

It´s hard to say. Peoples experiences differ as you have seen for yourself. Only way to find out is to try it for yourself.

My machine is brand new and very fast with almost any distro i have tried. Sabayon 3.3 DVD is an exception. Boot time is upwards of 2 minutes, and the system really isn't as stable as it should be. I would STRONGLY recommend getting the 3.3mini iso. It flies. Boot time is comparable to Ubuntu, and the system is more reponsive. I am convinced you also get more software on the mini than Ubuntu. Finally, the mini also has the very beginnings of a new binary installer on it (project Entropy). Haven't tried it as I've spent most of the time I've had it running emerge world, but once it's done I'll try it.

There is also an update to 3.3.1 for the DVD due out soon, I would recommend that if you really want the DVD, it's basically all bug fixes.

As far as compile times and install goes... well, it long. Normally with Sabayon the theory is that upgrade specific apps that you want newer version of, but leave everything else until the next CD/DVD comes out. It is possible to emerge world to upgrade everything (I am doing it now), but its not a simple procedure, and can take days (and I'm using the mini). Most apps on a fairly quick computer will install in 15 minutes to an hour. If you wanted to upgrade, say, OpenOffice then make sure you choose the binary. For an app that big compiling would take hours.

Boot times super fast. Application performance would be hard to beat, snappy as hell. Compile & install times are relative to the app & it´s size. Slower than a binary distro though. Kde flies with & without beryl.

My laptop nearly choked on the Mini Edition:( But then again my old laptop doesn't go over too well with most newer distros. Hence why I might be reverting to Dapper on my laptop.

Well, Sabayon has ground my machine to a halt. Boot takes a minimum of two minutes to the login screen, two minutes to a KDE screen, and 3-5 minutes for all features of KDE to load. Every possible function takes ages, and most Apps or Utilities I launch never end up launching...Hell, even shut down takes forever!

I'm asking for help on the Sabayon forums, but it looks like I'll have to find a different KDE distro. And I know it isn't my machine, because Ubuntu with a full KDE installed ran as smoothly as GNOME.

DVD or mini? If thats the DVD I am not really surprised. 3.3.1 might be usable, but for me 3.3 was not. The mini is a whole different story. It flies.

DVD. And it really shouldn't make a difference if this is going to be a viable OS, in my opinion...I also think it's interesting that I'm getting support in here faster than I am in the Sabayon forum (http://www.sabayonlinux.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5820)). Ubuntu Community is awesome :^)

The mini and the DVD are really almost 2 different distro's. Sure they share the same repo's, but so does Kororaa and Gentoo, and they are all different. The fact is that the mini installs what is for most distro's standard, and the DVD installs EVERYTHING you could possibly want. And it takes f...o...r...e...v...e...r... That said, I love Sabayon. I avoid the DVD version and it flies, and it is like "use gentoo and not worry about breaking it, because you have it back in 30 minutes anyway".
