I am new to Ubuntu, and want to dump Windows from my Compaq 730US, then use Ubuntu as the sole operating system after reloading my data files. I use OpenOffice and FireFox and Thunderbird and my wireless USB apparently works. This laptop is about 6 years old and would probably benefit from a format of the HD. Would this be a good, safe decision? I'm tired of having two operating systems, and appreciate good advice.

If you've dual-booted and know everything will work, then sure. And you can get help for the stuff that doesn't work perfectly.
I say, take the plunge ;)
The only thing you should ask is this: are there any programmes that you know you run under Windows that you know you can't run under Linux and would miss? If there are I'd keep the dual boot. If there aren't then I'd go for it.
If everything works the way you want it then go ahead and do it.:D
Careful though, it can be addictive.
