Greetings,

It is almost time for us to have our inaugural IRC meeting.

The main topics that we will be covering are SFD ideas and Install Fest items.

If you have a topic you would like to discuss, let us know.

Our IRC channel is #ubuntu-maryland on irc.freenode.net

Hey. Sorry but I won't be able to make this one. I'm at DEFCON!!! wooot

Anyway, I'd love to get some answers from this discussion. What's happening with the giveaway computers? What's the BIOS password? (Luis?) How quickly do we have to get them moved? How are we giving them away?

Presentation topics also need to be discussed. I again suggest that a few of us hop over the library to look at the location and figure out where everything will be. Will we actually have enough room?

Sorry again, but I'll be partying w/ geeks in vegas!

Okay - here's a dumb question - how do I register for IRC?

There's no registration necessary. To log on, all you need to do is download an IRC client. My personal favorite is XChat, but others also like irssi and Gaim/Pidgin. Once you've downloaded the client, you initiate an IRC session by going to an IRC server and then choosing a channel. In our case, you'd go to irc.freenode.net and our channel is ubuntu-maryland.

You can choose a nickname and, if you want to, you can register it so no one else can use it, but registration is not mandatory. For more information on IRC, see this page and this page and this page if you choose to use XChat.

And for our friends who are on still on Windows I like Chatzilla. Mac and Ubuntu users can also chose Chatzilla if you wish.

Depending upon your browser configuration (FireFox+Chatzilla works for me), once you have an IRC client installed you may be able to click on this link to #ubuntu-maryland and be taken directly there.

Remember that if you do not use the above link, once you are logged into the irc.freenode.net server in chat box type in '/join #ubuntu-maryland' without the quotes to find us.

Yeah, I forgot about the Windows folk. Gaim/Pidgin works beautifully on Windows too. ChatZilla's probably easier though.
