Welcome to the North Carolina LoCo forum!

The LoCo was just started a couple of days ago in response to the push by the US LoCo team to fill in the void in underrepresented states.

The team has this forum, and will soon also have a mailing list available.

Once we've got our mailing list and most of the current members are on it we'll start talking about regular meetings and set up an agenda for what we hope to accomplish in North Carolina.

In the meantime, feel free to post here or to chat live in #ubuntu-northcarolina on the Freenode IRC network!

I wasn't aware of anyone in the IRC channel from Jacksonville. So far it is mostly the Triangle area (due to an announcement to our local LUG in the Raleigh area) plus one from Greensboro.

A LoCo can be thought of as a sort of users group covering a limited geographical area (in this case, the state of North Carolina). You can learn a lot more about what to expect here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LoCoFAQ

Almost every state in the US has a LoCo now, with a few exceptions that *should* get plugged by the end of the year.

I expect we'll likely have monthly IRC meetings and also local meetings once the mailing list is up. This doesn't take the place of your local LUG but will give more focus to the local Ubuntu community.

If you're new to the area there, make sure to get across the TN border to Ducktown. It's not huge, but they have some GREAT whitewater rafting there. Here's a good idea of the rafting.

Once we have a good number of people on the mailing list I'd like to plan on having an online meeting to determine what we want to get out of this LoCo, what we want to put into it, and potentially have some smaller local meetings.

viridari - Glad we now have a local establishment so to speak. I too reside in the Raleigh Area and offer any assistance with any local activities you may have in store such as meetings or whatever.

I'm an I.T. Professional like yourself and an experienced Linux user of 5 years now spanning every major distro with this past year focused on Kubuntu. My personal interests are Video editing and digital photography. My personal systems are all 64bit architecture so I'm very familiar with the "quirks" associated in this area. I welcome the opportunity to assist others when and wherever I can in all aspects and areas. Feel free to contact me anytime. I'll be checking in here regularly.

Regardless of your technical savvy or time with U,K,X buntu, everyone can contribute to this forum. Take a few minutes a couple times a week and pick a topic that interests you and jump right in. Maybe your experience with an issue or how you did something could help another. It's also a great place to pick up tips and tricks for yourself all while learning more about your computer and the Ubuntu system.

Yet another Jacksonville resident checking in. I have been very interested in Linux since Mandrake 7. I didn't get a lot of experience until Hoary came along. Since then I have been Windows free with the occasional video conference on Skype and now my iPhone has me shackled back to MS. Thank God for Virtual box.

I am trying to break myself into the IT field. I am currently on the certification road (no comments please) and hope to use the tools available in Linux to provide me with the knowledge possible to excel in the securities field. I would really like to further my knowledge of Linux and even help developers if needed.

Hello from SV Drakus in Oriental NC.

SV means Sailing Vessel. Yep, this web connection is coming from aboard our sailboat/home.

Let me take this opportunity to spread my plea for help in the Gutsy Gibbon upgrade process. I've so far turned my AMD64 HP laptop into a brick. The upgrade was as per the notice contained within Synaptic Package Manager. It took a real long time to get the upgrade downloaded. I activated the upgrade process and watched as many dependice conflicts and failures to install were passing by. At one point I took the chance to see what was "different" between the current file and the proposed file. When I did that the install process went to a command line screen and that was all she wrote. Brick. I tried to restart from some of the other kernels that would show upon start up but always ended at the same place: a light blue screen with no forms or text, just a cursor that I could move.

As I write this it is coming off of the HP that I was able to boot with a Gutsy .iso > CD which I downloaded & burned on our other Feisty equipped laptop. When I try to find what happened to my hda using Krusader and Krusader's MountMan, there is no showing of a hda or an hdb (there are two hd's in this laptop.

I'd like to get my email,browser and boat stuff recovered. When I go into the install process on this Gutsy boot disk, it looks like it is going to reformat the drive. I sure don't want to do that again. It happened when I went from Drapper to Edgy.

Would be grateful if a wise Ubuntu wizard can help me secure the files.

Other than this catastrophe, it's real nice weather in Oriental this week!

Well, I'm not sure if this will help or not, but I've had great luck in the past recovering files using the "Trinity Resue Kit"... Its a 50mb bootable iso download that can find lost disks, and allow you to copy files and such over a network to another system. Read the docs, as it s not terribly user friendly, but the tools provided have saved me a couple times.

After trying several different distros, I've settled on the buntu family, though I have yet to choose between U, K or X. hey guys, I'm writing from Chapel Hill/Carrboro. I've been thinking about setting a digital template at an embroidery place here in the triangle so that we can get things printed for our group if we want. The one-time digitization fee of the logo should be about $50 dollars, and then after that we're free to order whatever items we want from their place with the design on it. You can also supply your own products to be embroidered, so if you have a favorite bag/item that you would like to use then that is definitely an option as well. As a design, I was thinking of starting out using the standard ubuntu logo (similar to the forums one at the top of this page). Let me know what you guys think and i'll look into getting things set up!

Hello to everyone from Fayetteville/ Fort Bragg/ Cameron, NC. I have been using Linux for about 5 years now, Ubuntu for the last 2 years. Im glad to see a local community developing in this area for Linux and Ubuntu users. I have sampled and used a variety of distributions over the years and just finished my RHCT certification on the 11th so that I can begin teaching the RedHat curriculum at the local community college here in town. Hopefully, we can get the gears turning on this thing and work together to further the Ubuntu (and open source) projects.

Been around since Breezy. I use Ubuntu Studio and just started on Mythbuntu.

Just want to say hello. Been using Ubuntu since Gutsy. Totally without any MS and lovin' it. My neck of the woods is southern Wake County near Holly Springs and Harris Lake. High to evert one.

Concord user here.(Just outside of Charlotte) I've been using Ubuntu sense Breezy, and used Fedora before that, tracking back to Fedora Core 2. I run Kubuntu 8.04 on my laptop, and Mythbuntu on my DVR machine. My main desktop is still stuck with XP, however, due to hardware incompatibilities, Windows games, and my iPod needing to be tethered to iTunes, but I might look into running XP in VirtualBox for iTunes.

Just got clued into the whole LoCo thing, so I figured I'd chime in. I'm glad to see there are some NC users.

I'm in Concord also, great to hear from someone close by.

Trinity, NC here.... Work in Thomasville. I have been using Ubuntu for about a year now. I have two pc's dedicated to Ubuntu, one to puppy linux, and the kids have an xp rig to play their games on. My wife has xp on her laptop and she is afraid of change and will not give Ubuntu a try, LOL.

I've been using Ubuntu for a few months now. I'm from Marion right in between Asheville and Hickory. I've been working on my own here cant find a user group anywhere with in a reasonable distance. glade to see theres people around here getting away from windows.

I will be moving to Pinehurst in a few months. My wife is already there. And damn does she have the worst luck with Linux. She keeps having an issue and she is about ready to give up (and I am not there to fix it).

I have installed (X)Ubuntu on about 12 computers in the last month.

At my current location, if we add in the Mac OSX, we have about a 50% market-share.

I am pushing hard, just wish that these guys were having the issues while I was here to help, instead of my wife a long ways away! :confused:

I have been using Linux since '02 when I put Mandrake on a computer to IP MASQ. ICS in Windows 98/ME sucked! Went full itme in 06 with Breezy. I haven't looked back. Switched quite a few people to Linux, including my parents, my wife, my wife's grandma, and gonna work on my kids when I get home. (The oldest will be 5 this summer, so they really don't know much yet) Might as well start them out on Edubuntu!

Edit: Fixed her computer. Was an issue with the upgrade stopping part way through and not upgrading to the newest Xorg.

I've been using Linux for a long time but have recently switched over to Ubuntu full time. I've used Ubuntu since Breezy off and on. I've ran everything from Slackware, Debian, Arch, Gentoo, Suse and a few more I'm sure.

Hi All, I am glad to see that the North Carolina Ubuntu community is growing. I consider myself a noob in Ubuntu. Years ago I tried to enter into the Linux world with Mandrake 6.0 but I gave up due to a lot of hardward issue with a toshiba laptop that I had at that moment.

Ubuntu had change everything to me. For new users it is very smooth to learn and thanks to communities like this it is even smoother. This sounds a little bit crazy but thanks to Microsoft I am here. I always will be in debt to them because they make me hate Vista so much that I decided to look for new ways to achieve the same things, and again, Ubuntu make this possible.

I am very sure that a lot of new folks will prefer to switch operating systems rather that keep going with Windows.

Coming to you from Kinston,NC. I've been trying out Live CD/DVDs for years now. I made the complete move about 7 or 8 months ago. I started out with Linux Mint 8 then 9. I've just finished setting up Ubuntu 10.10, it's awesome. I have it all themed out and set up. Just wanted to say Hi, I have brought two of my friends over to Linux (Mint) and they love it. I'm still running Mint 9 on my Acer netbook. I think it will get a new Ubuntu install next weekend.

I'm hoping there is a local Ubuntu club around the kinston/goldsboro area. I would love to get involved with fellow Computer Geeks, to maybe pass on some knowledge and to gain alot more knowledge about Ubuntu and Linux.

Looks like 2010 was the last post on the NC. page. I'm in Mooresville, using Ultimate Edition Ubuntu 2.9. Been using linux of and on for years but now that I'm retired I plan on really learning it well. I love the Ultimate Edition and plan on staying with it, but it is built on Ubuntu so have to be here for the basics. Lets just see if I get a response.

I didn't know there was a Ubuntu Forum section for the LoCos. Anyway, I don't think this LoCo is active anymore (or it is taking a haitus or something). I'm on the mailing list and there used to be quite a bit of activity, but it petered out in the last 10 months or so. There was actually a 11.04 release party in Chapel Hill that had about 10 people or so, but that was the last thing I heard about this LoCo.

Welcome to Raleigh, though. While the LoCo is not very active, there is plenty of Linux around here. Between Red Hat and the Open Source communities at the universities, there are around 4 decent events a year that are fun to go to and meet some geeks.
