I am going to be acquiring and older gateway. It currently has windows XP (SP1 I think).It probable has min. Ram to run current OS I was trying to figure out which out which distro would be best for the computer. Ubuntu 7.10 was recommended but I have also seen a post saying Xubuntu is more designed for older machines. I have tried 6.06LTS on a live disk and love it but I am confused as which distro would be best. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks in advance. ](*,)

We will need the full system spec's to help you in choosing a OS.
What I can suggest is that you look over the posts in this thread Operating systems for really, really old computers , it should help give you some ideas of what you can run on your hardware.

For the Win98 box, don't use DSL. It's only really good for live CDs, and very minimalistic setups. A better choice that would run on the Win98 box would probably be PCLOS. For the other machine, unless you're running a machine that you need to not have to install OS updates for a while, I would try Ubuntu 7.10.
Well, looking at your specs, I think xubuntu would be the ticket. It's very simple to use, with an older computer, it should work great.

I wouldn't say Xubuntu. It would work, but slowly. The sticky in the Other OS Talk forum has good information for low spec computers.
I'd probably use Zenwalk on this.
I think it would be best just to slap some RAM in that baby and have a good time. Keep the XP and do a dual boot for now. Just make sure the chips match or it could cause problems.
