Ok, take a deep breath and tell us here some more information.

Does your broad band internet plug into your computer via CAT5 network cable? Or does it plug in via USB?

Generally with network cable, your internet should be working on ubuntu as soon as you plug it into your PC. No need to mess around in the Terminal, it just works.

Ok, there are two ways to solve your problem here.

The first and easiest way is to go out and buy a broadband router modem that's suitable for your connection. It must have a network port on the back of it (and similarly you must have a network port on the back of your PC - most do). Configure up the router modem for your line so it works in windows (if it works in windows, it'll work in ubuntu). If you're unsure about this, ask a friend who is a bit tech savvy to help you out.

The second way allows you to keep your existing speedtouch modem, but does involve a lot of time and probably a lot of frustration if you're not familiar with the linux command line: http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-391404.html http://www.linux-usb.org/SpeedTouch/ubuntu/index.html
