Being brand spanking new to Linux and Ubuntu, I was wondering why not make sticky threads explaining the difference between "files" in linux and "programs" in windows. Another good topic would be how to download and open files. In windows you OPEN an .EXE starts the program. How do you get a file that is ;say a bin directory to run or open. I would also like to know if it is possible to save a .doc file from open office and paste it as a post in a blog on a web page. Thank you for taking the time to read and hopefully consider this idea for your new users forum.

That is not reallly a topic that comes up...
In Ubuntu, the Debian packages are used to install programs normally. (Go to http://www.opera.com and download the Opera 9.50b and you will see how it works) These are called ".debs" and are like the installers of Windows. Double click, give password, and you are set.
You download things the same way, and depends on your browser. If you wanted to run a file you downloaded in Linux, you have to mark it as executable. (right click, Properties). The command for this is "chmod +x <filename>"
You can copy and paste text into the blog, but you can't, on any client, use Word documents for web pages.
Thank you for that. I saved your reply in a document file so I can use it later. I don't know why people have such issues with v.7.10. I am loving how much nicer it is and how much faster it runs than WinXP.

Really? Often times, Windows XP (a fresh install) runs faster because it is a much older OS, six years.
I like Linux better than any other OS I have tried so far too.

I suppose most of the people who are using v.7.10 are fairly experienced users.I bought the [COLOR="Red"]Linux Web Server CD Bookshelf by O'Reilly Media[/COLOR]. It comes with [COLOR="Red"]Linux In A Nutshell[/COLOR] in paperback and six books on the CD-Rom. I'm in the process of reading [COLOR="Red"][COLOR="Red"]Running Linux[/COLOR][/COLOR] on the CD. Yes, I don't know if it has something to do with a ramdisk, but it seems like the applications all open faster. Open office is probably three times faster. I never did like M$ Office. I never could afford it.
@doondoon Welcome. Learning a new OS is overwhelming at first, but as with anything as you use it you will become more familiar with it...

@LaRoza: People are often impressed with the speed of Windows whenever they *reboot*. Over time though performance degrades.
With Ubuntu performance is a little slower out of the gate, but it does not degrade as with Windows.

I don't use Windows enough to know that.
Linux comes with a functional suite of apps, Windows comes with nothing.
I think it is safe to say that Windows isn't really an OS its a desktop or GUI at best. Ubuntu linux _is an actual OS_.

It may be a reference to non-NT based Windows.
Windows 1x-3x, 95,98,ME are all DOS with a graphical shell, and "Windows", ie, win.exe, is just a program.
In fact, Windows was originally specifically not labelled an operating system to avoid being sued by IBM, whose work they were copying.

Yeah, a fresh install is quite fast on XP. But, by the time you have all the additions that you really NEED (IE: Antivirus, etc.), your performance goes downhill.
As long as Amarok isn't set up to autostart on my computers, it actually STILL loads up and runs faster than XP with the same level of programs.
Like I said Windows is a gui.The windows part doesn't actually do much. All the real work used to take place in MS-DOS now they use C#.
