What do you think of Linux siotuation in India?

well GNU/Linux is pretty much known to average computer users in India.states like Kerala where the penetration is high! ubuntu is by far the most popular distro followed by fedora and opensuse.

Well, i think the place where i stay is far from using any other os than Ms Windows.. i dont understand, y....!!! Alright, i accept that linux is well known but the use..... I doubt.. most peolpe say, every1 around uses Ms so theres kind of an compatibility issue.... even regarding some parts in openoffice documents, n now that, Ms has changed their doc type to docx since 2007 office, the problem seems to have grown...

I dont understand y people shift to linux, if every1 does theres no issue to worry about!!!!!

Well, here we go!!!

I have suggested and succesfully convinced 2 of my freinds to shift to Linux, dumping windows!!!

They were too frustrated due to the viruses on windows!!!

Anyway, I don't think that its making much of a dent, at least where I live (Jabalpur, M.P.)

Because of the high level of piracy here, everyone I know is running a pirated copy of Windows, and most of them don't even know that they're doing something illegal.

I've tried converting a lot of people, been successful with getting more than half of them to run one of Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Xubuntu or Mint. Almost all of them, though, are still dual booting after more than a year of using Ubuntu.

Some people are dual booting for games, some are dual booting for programming environments that are taught in school/college, and which are limited to Windows (like Visual Basic). I even know one guy who is dual booting because iTunes makes the task of managing everything in his iPod very easy compared to gtkpod, amarok and rhythmbox. gtkpod is not really as easy as iTunes for managing the iPod, and amarok and rhythmbox cannot do videos.

Then again, there's one guy I know who dual boots Windows with Kubuntu because he likes amarok and amarok is not available for Windows.

In fact, in Channai, a lot of government departments including TNEB, Port Trust etc are using linux for backend services, and have replaced most MS frontends.

But India is a "consumption-oriented" linux implementer. I don't see many contributions to Linux by Indians living in India.

I've been talking here and there and distributed some CDs.....now people come p to me and ask about Linux,and I'm becoming the head of the linux section in the to-be-set up research wing under the IEEE chapter in our college,another means and ways to spread linux plus raise the skillsets of the people who are interested.

Well thats a challenge but making people believe in linux and convincing them to use it isnt difficult I think...

And Bhavi, Please don't use stupid misspellings for Microsoft. We are not against anybody, we just want to support ubuntu.

When i discuss the same with people, they say that the problem is not its userfriendlyness, it is: Its compatibility!!! Most people around, when use Windows, it becomes difficult to interact!! And with Ms changing their file formats like for Office 07, it becomes even more difficult.. What i could convince them on is using a dual boot!! But then: where can we get an mp3 player from?? What r dependencies?? Its so tedious!! Is net must???

And here, net is not something very common, still, in india... Loads of people dnt have it, and the remaining have a download limit of some 350 or 500 Mbs, or Max of 1Gb....

Atleast i cant ansewer all those questions to their satisfaction!!!

Their argument - "but its so fast and cheap", my argument - "but its so costly after the tiny limit is reached". I even know some people who've got dial up and are spending hundreds or Rupees per month, although they could get an Airtel unlimited usage plan for much less than they are currently spending on their decade old dial up.

I'm currently on an Airtel 256 kbps unlimited usage plan, and although its not as fast as most net connections in other countries, I'm happy enough with it for now.

I noticed that when I started using Mandrake (now known as Mandriva) a few years ago, but the kind of people we're talking about here wouldn't be looking at the exact figures that some software shows them as "download speed".

I use personal firewall when online in Windows.. If i block svchost (a win process) it doesnt allow ANY (DAMN) Transaction on the net...Its like 'lockin all connections!!!' And that file connects to Win site.. some others are also there, like some time sync etc..

Well, heres what i do these days: I have srated convincing people to use fedora, if not ubuntu!!! They complain about the dependencies and net.. So i say install fedora then, i have the src of the apts generally needed, so they can be compiled!!!! No probs!!!

Atleast, they are turning to linux!!! :)

Rt nw, m using a P4, 1.5 Gz with 256 Mb RAM 30Gb HDD... I know its quite an old conf, but lemme tell u, i was using 7.10 on a P3-450Mz with 256Mb n 20Gb!!! So there shouldnt be any problem with the current conf!!!! Rt?? Older versions like 6.06 work Fine, pretty fine, STILL!! Even Fedora 8 works fine!!

So, m left with no choice but turn to Fedora.....

But still, my mission to spread Linux continues..... :lolflag:

I started using Ubuntu because it was the only distro at that time (November 2005) which recognized my ethernet card. I've stuck with it since.

There was a time in between when no distro would recognize my ethernet card (mid-way 2007) and other parts of my hardware suddenly stopped working in all distros (old as well as new versions) while everything worked fine in Windows for a few months, but that might have some hardware problem. It all magically started working fine again on a random day, and I've been back on Ubuntu since then.

I guess we need more hype.. People aren't just ready to change (ie shift from MS) :(

Well, heres a news!! 1 more for ubuntu!!! Just finished installing 8.04 on a friends comp today morning!! He still wants windows but thats for GAMES!! Man.. He's dual bootin, But still, thats a lead!!

Around the place where I live, you say "Linux" and people wonder what the hell you're referring to! Hey! but I have 2 classmates who use Ubuntu! We are trying to popularize Ubutnu in school. Got one of my friends to dual-boot, but it isn't of much use to him bcoz he doesn't ave a net connection. :( But finally got an official Lucid disk passing around. yippee!

I use Ubuntu on my Laptop.

Many of my friends have installed Ubuntu on their Laptops after watching me use my laptop..

The things they find best are the Graphics and the Window System of Ubuntu....What they like about Windows is the Games and familiarity....

I am just trying to make people more familiar with Ubuntu, that's how I am helping in extending the Ubuntu community.

Slowly people are moving towards Linux, not sure about Ubuntu. Still education about usage of Linux is required among the general public, students, etc. As far as I know most developers, IT people started using Linux @ home.

Only linux that is big hit in india is Android.

Which is again not really "FREE".

Things can only improve for linux in India.

BTW my kid (9yr old) just want Mint on his laptop.
