I never really understood how this works. When can I dist upgrade to intrepid to start helping the devs with bugs etc..?

According to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/IntrepidReleaseSchedule alpha1 will be available June 12.

You can manually upgrade (by updating your sources list) any time you like. Any time before the release of the first Alpha, expect major breakage.
