Will intrepid be a dud?

I would like to be the first to begin the obligatory scare mongering.

I have no reason to believe that intrepid will be anything other than great, I would just like to be the first to panic.

I think so too. Hardy was the best yet. Another 6 months should make it rock.

personally, I hope Ibex will fix some of the long-lamented things to high on the brainstorm hitlist, such as suspend/hibernate, other powermanagement things for laptops and such. but I've been hoping for that since the last 5 Ubuntus or so.... but I still have hope! ;-)

It would be difficult for Canonical to make suspend/hibernate work on all laptops. Fortunately it works for me. Is there an article on Linuxonlaptops.org that gives instructions on how to get it to work?

To be honnest, I only tried a live session of Edgy, and I'm sure glad I didn't bother to use it. Feisty was tricky enough for me at the time I got around to installing it. I'm quite happy that Edgy is no longer supported. :KS

Hardy Heron lacked certain highly anticipated features (for instance the released version of FireFox 3...that we have Mozilla to blame, mind you). Just for a FireFox 3 with a truly polished Gecko would be worth the upgrade. OpenOffice.org 2.4 is already much easier to use than 2.3 (at least for switching the language for spellcheck it's been made more like MS Office and with reason...that's where I found OpenOffice tricky). OOo version 3.0 will support OOXML, so I'll be able to handle those files from the unfortunate who wasted their money on MS Office 2007 when the Ibex comes around.

If Intrepid Ibex will really offer greater opportunities regarding Internet connectivity, how about making sure multiple ethernet ports will be supported out of the box? That might be a kernel issue, but if it's beyond Canonical and Torvalds for the moment, it would at least be nice to see the Ubuntu repos include a home-brewed driver for multiple ethernet ports. I would be curious to see how well Ubuntu handles multiple WLAN cards (I haven't tried it yet) and if the Ibex will do a better job. It would also be cool if Ubuntu desktop would have an installer to install Ubuntu Mobile on supported devices. That would also depend on the availability of Ubuntu Mobile, considering I haven't heard of a release date for it yet.

I'd personally like to see the boot time substantially reduced. It does seem faster with Hardy than with Gutsy, but it could be much faster still.

I guess we just have to wait for the testing versions...shucks I guess we can't expect new artwork until towards the end. If more bugs get fixed by the time the Ibex is unleashed, it will outdo Hardy by far.

Well hardy heron works fine for me, but at the risk of getting flamed, browsing the forums give me the impression that for many users it was to 7.10 wath xp sp3 is to xp sp 2.

I also had problems at first, but I managed to solve them. I shouldn't have to though, because in feisty (ubuntu ultimate 1.4 gamers edition) and gutsy (official) I didn't have to setup anything at all :(

I hope it turns out to be a dud for the scaremongers, FUD spreaders and gossipers who do nothing else about it.

I think Ubuntu will keep ticking along nicely... but its better they get some serious breakage or spring cleaning out of the way with Ibex then later. A firm foundation for continued innovation is the way forward.

We should take stock of the criticisms and short-comings, and plan to rectify them over the next few years.

My hope is that the theme and tracker and nautilus get some serious love.

With Ubuntu's theme we should try and design something fresh, that is achievable with the current or near term Gnome technology.

Tracker needs to support better search results and more query types while nautilus needs to get into bed with xesam. Nautilus should integrate search alongside bookmarks as the main way to navigate your harddrive.

Also bring packagekit much more into the fold... that way we can get a add/remove and update-manager that is maintained upstream and will hopefully go from strength to strength.

The only thing that I would really like to see in II is a graphical bootloader like OpenSuse has. The current appearance of GRUB is... well... boring.

Apart from that, 8.04 is working pretty well here :D

A graphical bootloader won't happen anytime soon as far as I know. It doesn't even come pre-compiled in the repos. :(

With MPX being merged to master, it should be an exciting time soon for Linux distributions such as Ubuntu 8.10 "Intrepid Ibex". I assume you mean it will contain a large number of regressions?

If so, then perhaps...

If you mean it will be "worse" then 7.10 or 8.04, then no, I believe it will be better...

Same here. We would seem to be the minority though. (The primary problem introduced for me in Gutsy was that X would crash quite frequently whenever any 3D graphics were displayed. This seems to be resolved, at long last with Hardy. But it was a LOOONG year.

it's a dirty job but somebodys got to do it ?

i would put my money on this situation:

there will be a small group of users who will whine about II not being as stable as HH there will be a large mass of people not saying anything cuz for them it just works some things will brake that were not broken in HH and some bugs will be fixed

the wheel of release will turn on and 9.04 will be there soon enough to take the spotlight

it is funny, i have been using ubuntu since hoary hedgehog and because back at that days you really needed to configure and tweak your system, i now do it anyway... so i really don't see some of the "bugs" or "regressions" newer users see... i should give II to my sisters daughter (9) to see if she gets it installed...

Its too early to judge. Hardy is great, I've seen more of my friends trying Ubuntu thanks to the inclusion of Wubi and they are loving it. Hopefully with a new visual refresh and better implementation of PulseAudio and GVFS, II will be ready to roll

System->Administration->Login Window takes at least 5-10 minutes to load, and sometimes doesn't work at all. That really needs to be fixed.

Kids are much more "computer savy" than adults over 40 so your mother would be a better test of ease of installation .

I'm closing this silly thread. If you don't want Intrepid to "be a dud", do something about it.
