I've read the following in various places:

  • The art team will rework the interface. This was originally planned for Hardy, but I suppose it got pushed back for the sake of stability testing.
  • Mark Shuttleworth once said that one of the main focuses of Intrepid would be system portability. Easier hotspot hopping, additional methods of Internet connection...

Aside from that, I speculate there will be an emphasis on improving speed.

As for portability, some focus should be put on a live USB system. Even better, combine it with a VM in a portable app...

I agree. In an age of USB keys and cheapskates, one should be able to put a bootable Ubuntu install image onto a USB stick without much fuss instead of using up another CD-R.

you can put Ubuntu on a usb stick or media card , I have hardy on a smartmedia card in my eeepc :) .

After UDS-Intrepid (starts on the 19th to the 23rd) we will know what the plans are, at the start of every development cycle there is a "Ubuntu Developers Summit" held when ideas are discussed and launchpad blueprints are discussed.

Mark said on the mailing list that the main focus will be portability and networking.

I thought you could put Ubuntu on a USB stick and boot from that if you have a PC that can boot from USB. Maybe I'm confused or missing something...

BTW - You can use CD-RW or DVD-RW and reuse them.

as I said above you can put Ubuntu on a usb stick if your machine will boot from one. or for that matter anything your box will boot from . I put it on a smartmedia card for my eeepc because that don't stick out making a target for breakage (physical) , but a usb stick works also and a usb harddrive or usb cd/dvd.
