Is it safe to add the intrepid repositories to hardy? I went browsing and saw some newer versions of packages.

Hi and if you do it can break your system and render it unusable. If you have space create a partition and test with out risk to your stable system.
Unless you want to do a full on upgrade, it's not a good idea. Intrepid isn't even at Alpha yet, for more info see the Intrepid development board. Also, if you want newer software, you could always try installing their source packages from the project website. Or, sites like getdeb.net have software built into debs that is sometimes more current than the stable ubuntu packages.
I concur..Let Hardy digest 1st..we just got it out for open release

Unless of course you are like me and love living on the bleeding edge, testing and troubleshooting the latest software. But for the average user, the best experience comes with the current stable release. I'd say it becomes RELATIVELY safe to upgrade during the alpha 6/beta period, which for intrepid is in September. But unless you are willing, ready, and capable of dealing with a potentially fired system, don't upgrade to intrepid. If you really just want to test it out, throw it on a virtual machine, or an extra partition
yea i agree with mac. after updating with the intrepid repo's the desktop stopped coming up. even xfdesktop command from the cli wouldnt work. So i had to remove all the intrepid repos and then redo most of the upgrades by picking and choosing ! :(

If you are just looking for newer software packages you are better off just compiling the latest greatest software yourself. Unless of course you want to Pre Alpha Test Intrepid. Just be aware of the hazards pre and early alpha testers face :)
