What app do you want that's missing?

If there's a *small* app that you want (that doesn't exist) that's missing in the Ubuntu 8.10 suite, please write the specification for it here and I'll write it. :guitar:

8. listview drag and drop support for file-roller
9. Add an option to launch stuff using only a single click instead of double click
10. fix evolution multiple instances of the same email when synching gmail using imap.

A GUI serial port monitoring program similar to Windows Terminal which can log serial port RS232 and USB information, and that you can send commands to external devices (for example AT commands to mobile phones). Also a long list of commands (in the form of a script) can be sent with the resulting responses logged.

What about a 'sensible' editor for fstab, that should be fairly simple to do?

filter bar- filter current nautilus folder content according to a criteria. for example, if you've got a folder with the following files: a.7z b.7z c.7z leonardo.txt crappiticrap.txt n.bz2 .. .. .. millions of files

writing *.7* in the filter box will show the following files: a.7z b.7z c.7z

I'm not sure whether when there's a folder inside the current folder, should it's content be shown if it matches the criteria.

integration with tracker will allow for some intersting stuff, like showing the files with a sentence inside of them, etc.

Maybe won't count as small, but how about an app where you can drop some images and an mp3 and you get a video, with transitions and all?

This would be a valuable addition to nautilus! It's one of the things I still miss from Vista, to easily search for files in a directory. (support for regular expressions would make it totally awesome :) )

Fstab and menu.lst get mucked up if you decide to use a non Ubuntu family distro. Can't we have this as a repair option with the live distro ? My original post on this is here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=799518 If this was done more people may catch the Ubuntu 'bug' and it would be less necessary for a new fstab editor.

I like the filter plug-in idea. How about a universal filter plug-in that can be integrated into Nautilus, Konqueror, and Dolphin?

I would like a stand alone utility to sort image files by resolution(pixel height, pixel width, or total pixel count).

• Fix gnome-panel to be able to set foreground colour, or some magic to inverse the color so its readable....
• gnome formatter - what ever happened to that? Theres still no easy way to format usb key drives...

• Fix sdl so it dosn't shut the window manager out from shortcut keys (alt-tab, volume keys etc)

If you are going to do this, have a look at paman, paprefs, pavucontrol, pavumeter etc. first. It's maybe easier to add features to one of those programs :)

So, *new* programs...

Reading this through again, I have come up with two potential programs which I am capable of writing. One idea came from a PM, MadsRH sent an idea about a GUI Ubuntu USB configurator.

-Advanced sound testing application including realtime 3d sound positioning using C++ with OpenAL -"USBuntu" (this might be done with scripting, I am not sure as of yet)

So, what do you guys think about these?

There are already a couple projects working on "USBuntu" (USB ubuntu installer). See my howto for those projects. :)

Oh well guess I'll do the sound test app if there are no further ideas

Also an extracting app that handles split files (eg file_name.rar.part1) like winrar does is much needed as all apps I've tried, doesn't seem to recognise all the different split files or merge the files back together once extracted.

1. ^s selects files by criteria, Which is not very helpful if you've got lots of files in the directory (for example - in a pictures / downloads / bin / trash can / pictures / code directories), and then you need to hunt for the different files, rather than refining the search criteria)

1. the filter bar should (IMHO) show only the files that follow the filter criteria - this way, the visual load is reduced, and it's easier to find files.

1. ^s is not easily discoverable - you have to know it exists.

1. ^s doesn't have xesam (tracker) integration, and does not search in subfolders

If you really want to do an application from scratch that nobody has even started before your best bet is a game or something otherwise you are probably going to have to use other peoples work.

I tried dreamlinux a while ago and they had some kind of filejoiner and splitter..perhaps you can check that.

And rightclick and format is coming in the next gnomeversion I think :)

I would like a simple frontend to mythtv, not one with fancy graphics. So I can watch TV or a recording while doing other things on my computer.

A bit what like the totem plugin was trying to do but actually make it work and also so live tv can be watched with channel changing etc.

I've come to ubuntu after spending a few years on osx. The only thing I miss from osx is the ubiquitous spell checker/dictionary accessible with a double-click to highlight the work then a right mouse click to either look up the word or, if in a text field, correct the spelling. I really haven't been around the more mature linux userland to know if something like that already exists and/or if it does it'd be gnome or kde plug-in.

I would like to see a application that would generate SeamlessRDP launchers for Windows apps. This would be extremely useful for peoople running Virtualbox, or launching apps seamlessly from a server. (maybe ability to make launchers for apps via SSH too would be nice.)

For example, you could type the hostname or IP of the server where the app is located, username/pw, and tick the options you want (i.e. compression, geometry, sound, etc) and the icon for it to use. Then it would create a desktop and/or menu shortcut and create a file containing the user credentials.

The user credentials file would need to be encrypted, or at least have solid permissions on it. Maybe use the keyring?

My vote would definitely be for a universal 16 channel graphic equaliser that can apply to any sound. Effects units and enhancers would be a bonus on that.

If it could filter sound from any software: Totem, Amarok, RealPlayer...etc, it would be a dream.

Unless I am wrong, this is missing in Ubuntu Linux.

I guess it's not an app, just a effort on a GUI for HandBrake, there is some preliminary work floating around. That would be on my wishlist. You asked. Those folks are kinda touchy about a GUI for linux. Someone cobbled together a kluge using mono & the MS GUI & then dropped it, or something, but that is something I'd like to see. The kluge did work some what, but was pretty primitive. Of course, so I'm I, so, it's still being used on one of my machines.

Actually, that's a fine idea: a transcoding app somewhere between Thoggen (does DVD->ogg only) and the various command-line craziness. It shouldn't be too hard to do a more advanced, but still simple, gstreamer-based transcoding GUI.

That's something I've wanted to do for a while, but I've never really had the time. It shouldn't be too difficult with Python and GStreamer. If I do hack something together, I'll make a Launchpad project and try to remember to post something about it here or something.

Take a look at my guide here, specifically Part D. Basically it processes audio using a 15-band equalizer (ladspa plugin). Any application that uses PulseAudio (including the applications you mentioned) will output equalized sound.

Although there is no user-friendly GUI to modify the bands, the core functionality is already there.

A Handbrake package would be awesome. Though I'm not sure it's stable enough for inclusion just yet...

I'm still working my way into Linux, but one of the largest challenges are the configuration files. Some have gui editors, others do not. I think fstab needs a good editor.

There is one pysdm in synaptic. PySDM is a PyGTK Storage Device Manager that allows full customization of hard disk mountpoints whitout manually access to fstab. It also allows the creation of udev rules for dynamic configuration of storage devices
