during each of 3 partial upgrades over the last 2 days xscreensaver was uninstalled then as soon as the partial upgrade completes update manager reinstalls it , same version each time .

I have also strange issues but not the same as you with the xscreensaver...
Both Apt and Aptitude is on "kept back" for me
The following packages have been kept back:
apt apt-utils aptitude libdb-dev libept0those are also held back for me , since we are just now getting to the actual "meat" of intrepid things will be strange for a while .
