I'm not a BUM user, but when I saw the project name I felt compelled to post a message.

In US English, the word "bum" refers to a homeless person, which is innocous enough. But in "Commonwealth English" (ie the UK, Australia and other former members of the British Empire) it refers to one's buttocks, and in verb form refers to a sexual act, and as such is quite rude.

If you want your program to be taken seriously, might I suggest a name change?

Do you really think the developers don't know this? ;)

You are however right, it will never be taken seriously with its current name.

Well, as long as it is seriously usable, who cares about the name? Would a crappy program with a serious name be more compelling to use?

Just asking... /N

BTW, I'm fully aware of the irony in writing a post like this under the name "WakkiTabakki"... :D

crappy

*groans* :p

Honestly, even with the typical sense of cheekiness (I tried!) the Linux community has I'd say this is probably going a little far.

The program name is "Boot-Up Manager". The shortname bum is just a coincidence for the package.

This piece of software is very serious, so users interested in handling and modifying their init script will use it. I have never installed or removed a software as a consequence to its package name.

My mother has recently started editing her photos a lot on the version of ubuntu I installed for her recently. She's got bored of started her editing application manually all the time, and has now asked me to BUM her GIMP for her.

:(

#9

Is is a quick BUM?

Or is it a slow BUM?

Or does it BUM fags?

as in bumming some1? They say that? I heard that the peace sign used backwards is bad over there.

#12

I just used my bum for the first time........There was a right load of crap running in there i did`nt need.

lol

I am going to install bum now: because of its whimsical name!=D> =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> =D>

#14

I don't see any problem with the name BUM. It's probably the least abrasive of buttocks slang. I think it works well, in fact when I saw the name BUM I guessed that it actually stood for Boot-Up Manager before I read about it.

At least it's not called a$$, or arse, or.... I'll stop now.

#15

What's in a name? The GIMP has been taken pretty seriously.

#16

Several posters here are asking for a boot up the BUM.

#17

roflBUMo! This program has got to be worth it just for provoking a thread like this! :D

Although, seeing that BUM got in first, perhaps I should think about changing the name of my Amply Revised Simple Editor?

Hmmm, I wonder if whoever wrote 'fsck' had any misgivings about the name of that program?

:D

#18

Be nice boys and gals lol, this topics gotten a little wild and crazy, if you dont like the name, stick with B.U.M...and say it as the letters and not the full "bum"...simple solution I believe, I love Ubuntu no matter WHAT the name suggest..implies..makes you think whatever, its a boot up manager, end of story!

Sorry if I suggest anger in this post, as that was not my intentions. I'm just stating that this topic has gone far enough and I feel it should just be left alone. Anyone with me?

what does 'gimp' means?

#20

songo said: what does 'gimp' means?

There are other cruder slang definitions, but mainly it refers to a person with an injury that inhibits their mobility, especially one who walks with a limp.

#21

How 'bout it be changed to MOB, that sounds better and a little more assertive.

MOB = Manager of Boots (shoemaker?):p  or IBM = Integrated Boot Manager (can you say lawsuit?) :-D

#22

lol, imagine a convo over the water cooler: Guy #1: yeah I spent all weekend grabbing headers so I could get my bum to compile. Guy #2: Yeah, but when it was running again you loved it. I sware, I love bum so much, not a day goes by when I am not impressed by the simplicity and beauty of bum. Guy #1: Yeah, but it's a community thing, anyone can jump into bum, play around, and soon enough everyone will have what you did inside bum. Guy #2: Yeah, open bum is the best way.

lol... but B.U.M would be better...

If we're talking about names of software packages, how about sex. Yes, that's right, there is a package called sex. Simple Editor for X. There is also a picture viewer called Pornview. Best of all, there is sextractor. Which is actually a Source Extractor for Astronomical images.

Dude...if your gonna post something like that.....BE MATURE! I dont think your post will last long, in fact, I might direct the moderators to it and see what they say about it. I do realize I am running on thin ice myself with a few of my posts on this topic...but my word! You people need to like be more mature...if your offended by it..do as I have said by the MANY posts I've put on here and just the B U M...as the letters instead of calling it the other word for the buttox!

This topic has become 2nd grade..what happened to maturity? We just threw it out the window or something?

Alan (official supporter and helper for Louisiana, United States area)

I promise I have this topic marked so as to anybody makes any responses I get them...dont make me come back and repeat myself!

I ended up here wanting to find out what BUM stood for and it makes sense, but I would not have come here if it was BMGR as I would have assumed it stood for Boot Manager. Keep it or change it, noe that I know what it means it doesn't matter. I will state that there are numerous other programs I have no idea what they are due to the names given them, but coming from a unix environment and using 'awk' I eventually find out what the commands are used for.

#27

could be worse. just imagine the plight of the first unitarian church of kennebunkport.

#28

Honestly there are probably worse names for the app. Consider this:

The acronym could just as easily left out the U as Boot-Up is a hyphenated word. This would leave you with BM. We won't touch what that stands for in other contexts.

And yes, in regards to maturity: Shh It went out the window...

Linux can be fun too, you know.

LegalCpu.com has developed the logistics necessary to help our clients with services such as small claims management, nationwide DBA filings, Adult and Minor Name Changes, Divorce, Trademarks and many more …An extraordinary staff at LegalCpu.com is ready to offer quick, yet professional services to our customers. Most services are offered within 24-48 hours.

Karine Megrabyan, an associate LegalCPU.com provided phenomenal services towards my case. Not only did she file my case, but she found the correct holding company in order for me to get me security deposit back. As a 63 year old disabled senior citizen, Ms. Megrabyan wanted to arrange free transportation services so I can make the trial date. I appreciate her kindness...(case was settled prior to trail).

Thank You, Robert J. Mardirosian, FL

I really appreciate Mike Simon (LegalCPU associate) for helping me setup my long dream of owning my own business. The process was done in a week and answered all my question.

Thank You, Jack McDermont (Jack’s Electrics, Los Angeles, CA)

You say you're not a bum user. Well, I'd really like to know how that's possible.

Yes, I couldn't resist.

#38

Didnt say that..didnt even imply it.

#39

Who cares? It means boot up manager. No problem. Its a good acronym.

Would you change the common name for a sub-species of donkey - *** - because it reminds you of the slur used for humans?

#40

and i repeat yet again, we're not in 2nd grade folks use your brains and figure out how to be mature :)

there's a video/image viewer and organizer called Pornview. I dont think BUM is anywhere close to being offensive. it could be MUCH worse

ROFL oh my...so it could be worse! I stand corrected! anyways, I just wanted to stir a pot a little n see what happened (kidding mod's!) but seriously its just one of those things that people just need to use a brain about. :) Anyways gotta run! ](*,)

I could never take the clothing line BUM seriously...but look at that.

BTW, look at the first result on Google for bum:

Bum - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

BUM, an acronym used in the USA, for Business Update Meeting, a quarterly report given to ... B.U.M is the acronym for Boot Up Manager for (K)Ubuntu Linux ... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bum - 15k - 7 Mar 2007 - Cached - Similar pages

It's not a very good name. But that is common in open source where so many people discount the value of good marketing... to their own peril.

Canonical and Ubuntu are an island of descent marketing in a sea of poorly made marketing choices, and Ubuntu owes as much of its popularity to common sense marketing as it does to quality and common sense defaults. (Though disgruntled fans of other distros are quick to point out that its really just Mark's money, and then proceed to continue their self defeating marketing practices.)

Personally, my favorite project naming catastrophe is 'Podfuk'. Yes. That is a real project name. I believe it means something innocuous in Czechoslovakian or something:

http://atrey.karlin.mff.cuni.cz/~machek/podfuk/podfuk.html

While sysv-rc-conf is quite serviceable, there is a definite need for a gui interface for this purpose.

However, since this is really not about boot up in an exclusive sense, but about controlling services at any time, including boot up and shut down, what's wrong with a nice, straightforward name like "Services Manager"?

I think that has to take the prize for the worst thought out name ever, however - could it be that that name will be what it is remembered for - after all there are millions of packages/apps with names like 'services manager' 'install manager' and the like, named exactly as to their purpose - podfuk however is pretty memorable, and albeit doesnt have much (except maybe in Czech or something) obvious connotation to its purpose, it does have the memorability points. there's a window managing software called 'encule', (french translation of '**** in the *') Euro, the european currency, means 'piss' in Greek

Any word has a bad translation, if it doesn't make you smile, then you got a problem.

#48

The only reason I managed to get people using the GIMP was because of the name. Silly names are always remembered more than stuff like "OpenOffice".

More likely, Jodrell does not know how punny developers are really.

And, by the way, ilokano tribal language 'bum' means "in, out, up, down, through... usually pertaining death, ghosts, or spirits." For instance: "Awán ti ngumáto a dínto bumabá. What goes up must come down."
