I was just about to download the 2009 "free edition" DVD from the Mandriva website but when I went into the mirror to download the 64-bit ISO I found the following disk image in there:
mandriva-linux-free-2009-dual-arch.iso
Does anyone know what this is for, it's only 692MB and if it's a dual architecture of the base KDE install or GnomeI'll download it.
it's the mini ISO. It's basically a fairly minimal system - you're intended to install it and then add on whatever you want via urpmi. It doesn't have KDE or GNOME, IIRC, you get IceWM out of the box. Unless you're happy customizing the package selection post-install, I'd go for the DVD.
Okay thanks, just curious to know what it is, I may give it a try though as I like starting from the ground up choosing packages so to speak.
If you like to install that way, then yep, mini's a good choice - that, or a network install and use the fine-grained custom package selection view (when it asks you what desktop you want there's a button that will let you pick broad package groups instead; on THAT screen there's another button which lets you pick individual packages instead of groups).
